I am running for Town Council because I am confident I can make a positive impact.  My family has lived in Los Gatos for 33 years, and I am a former Silicon Valley chemist.  As a scientist, I like to deal in facts. I have attended and spoken at Council and Planning Commission meetings for the past 20 years and served on four transportation and housing commissions.  I collaborated on the Town’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan and the recent Downtown Parking Study. Working to understand the issues facing our neighborhoods and schools, I attend workshops and meetings, listen to residents and decision makers, and ask lots of questions. I understand the big picture as well as many of the little details.

The growing Bay Area affects Los Gatos – traffic increases, economic stresses, housing demands, school issues.  Los Gatos needs thoughtful collaboration between merchants, the schools and town government.  Local business owners, school board members, town commissioners, young adults, and your neighbors have endorsed me because I am a dedicated, collaborative, and informed leader.

We can’t stop change; we must decide how best to respond. I’m ready to work hard, with you and for you, to benefit the present and future generations of Los Gatos.

My name is Matthew Hudes and I’m running for Los Gatos Town Council. I’ve lived in Town with my wife Qui for 34 years. We raised our two children here, where they attended the fantastic Los Gatos public school system. I’m running because I grew up in a small town and I love this Town. But Los Gatos today faces new challenges that require creative, innovative solutions. That’s where I can help.

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted the town economy in a big way. But Los Gatos is resilient. That’s why I’ve worked with 20 food, retail, property, and tech leaders to get the conversation going--not only on reopening Downtown businesses--but also building for the future across the entire Town. Getting back to where we were isn’t enough. The Town should not only survive this pandemic, but thrive going forward.

Part of what makes Los Gatos so special is the entrepreneurial heritage of Los Gatans. But just as important is the character of the Town. That’s why as a member and chair of the Planning Commission and Historic Preservation Committee, I’ve been out front on protecting hillsides and neighborhoods. I heard loud and clear from residents that we need to level the playing field, so that outside developers don’t re-route business from the Downtown to their proposed North 40 development.

I was a partner at Ernst and Young and Deloitte for over 20 years, where I helped large and small companies innovate their way toward success using solid financial fundamentals. I also started my own bioinformatics business in Town.  I want to bring those same fiscal principles to the Los Gatos budget, which is in immediate need of some transparency.

5 former mayors as well as almost every current member of the Planning Commission on an individual and personal basis support me because they know that as a Town Council member for Los Gatos, I’ll fight for everyday Los Gatans. Heidi Owens is a proven leader with over 25 years of executive, governmental, and professional experience including a decade-long career managing Customer Listening at Cisco and time in the CEO’s Office at the County of Santa Clara. She has served as a Town of Los Gatos Commissioner and was recommended for appointment by Supervisor Mike Wasserman to the County of Santa Clara Advisory Commission for Consumer Affairs. 

She has provided leadership on the Board of Directors for many organizations including as the President of the Women in Business Network at Santa Clara University Founding Board Member of Global Women’s Leadership Network at Santa Clara University, the Los Gatos Chapter of American Businesswomen’s Association. Women in Telecom, and the League of Women Voters of Southwestern Santa Clara County.  She is an active member of the Rotary Club of Los Gatos through which she serves meals to the homeless at St. Luke’s. 

Ms. Owens is married to a Fire Captain and has two daughters at Alta Vista Elementary School, having served as Alta Vista Home and School Club Committee Chair, Girl Scout Troop Leader, Branham Hills Girls Softball Coach and Executive Board Member, and Los Gatos United Soccer Coach. 

She holds a Master’s in Business Administration from Santa Clara University and a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from CSU Fullerton. 

Heidi Owens is a fiscal conservative and social progressive.  She is a moderate Democrat who believes in balancing the interests of all stakeholder groups in decision making.  She seeks to create the most public good with the least private harm.  She is also a staunch privacy advocate, in terms of both government surveillance and consumer online privacy.

Michael Kane is CEO and owner of Kane Investment Management Inc.  Located in Los Gatos, the firm has successfully managed clients' portfolios for 38 years.  He is a registered investment advisor and general securities principal with deep financial expertise.  Michael has been an active participant in town government devoting eight years to the Planning Commission with two years as Chair, and eight years to the Historic Preservation and Hillside and Residential Design committees,  Michael is also a dacades long member of the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce and the Los Gatos Morning Rotary, and he served 4 years as a Governing Board Member of the Community Hospital.   Contributing to the Los Gatos cultural, school and sporting activities, Michael has a wide array of sponsor and volunteer activities including:  Music in the Park, Jazz on the Plazz, Daves Avenue school reading program, Los Gatos Hills Swim League and Bobby Sox Softball, and St. Luke’s Pantry for the homeless. Michael is also a proud “10-Gallon” CMV Neg blood donor for NICU premature babies and a sponsor of the YWCA Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes Non-profit to end sexual assault.  He is a graduate of the University of Michigan where he also taught courses in addition to teaching at San Jose City College, Evergreen Valley College, and the Criminal Justice Training Center.   Prior to his residence in Los Gatos, Michael had a successful Army career during which time he was decorated by the secretary of Defense with the Joint Services Commendation Medal for exceptionally meritorious service.

Our Town Economy

The COVID-19 pandemic has magnified the political and societal issues we must address together, as a community of residents and business owners. The pandemic has presented new challenges that affect us today and will likely persist into the future. We must develop a sustainable financial plan for long-term success to alleviate hardship, curtail the pandemic impact and restore economic vitality to Los Gatos.   To do this effectively, requires town government experienced in financial planning who will explore new local, county, state and federal agency funding opportunities as well as leverage existing resources.  The planning process and reporting of clear, measurable goals must be done with transparency.

Our Neighborhoods

We must work together to preserve our historic districts and protect the character and charm of our neighborhoods, while thoughtfully planning for intelligent development.  This requires a solid understanding of land use law which when applied wisely achieves drives intelligent, non-intrusive and appropriate development.

Our Community Health, Safety and Vitality

We must work together to expand our health, safety and vitality programs to serve the needs of all age groups with disaster preparedness and response, effective transportation options to relive congestion, and a pedestrian and school safety master plan.  This requires community input and thoughtful consideration of the needs of all.

Larry was born and raised in San Jose, he is third generation to the area.  Larry attended Del Mar High School and was very active with Sports and with both Marching Band and Jazz Band and was voted most musical by his graduating class.

Larry joined the Campbell Police Department Explorer Program, where he learned several aspects of Law Enforcement.  He attended West Valley College where he studied Administration of Justice. In 1985, he earned his POST Police Certification from the Police Academy.

In 1986 Larry joined the United States Army and California National Guard as a Military Policeman.  He served both active and reserve duty.  Larry retired from the Military in 1996, became a business owner providing Traffic Control during the BART expansion at the San Francisco Airport, and provided traffic control for funeral processions in the South Bay. 

Larry relocated to Hollister in 1998 and joined the Hollister Fire Department as a Paid Call Firefighter in 1999.  Larry also went to work that year for Pacific Bell/AT&T, and has been there for over 21 years.

Larry moved to Los Gatos in 2011 and is raising his 16-year-old son who currently attends Los Gatos High School.

Currently Larry is a Commissioner for the Town of Los Gatos, and is the Chairman of the Personnel Board.  He is also the Commander for the American Legion in the Campbell and Los Gatos area, the 1st Vice Commander for Santa Clara County, and is the Vice President with the Campbell Veterans Memorial Foundation.

Larry is one of the original sons of the Santa Clara Valley.  Born here 56 years ago, he has seen the many changes that Los Gatos and the Santa Clara Valley has gone through firsthand.  Larry is deeply passionate about Los Gatos, which is a unique "Gem in the Hills" in Santa Clara County and he intends to keep and maintain that “Old Town Charm of Los Gatos".  Larry plans to work on the present and upcoming issues that the Town of Los Gatos faces, including the ongoing traffic issues, parking issues, the downtown business issues, the housing issues, the finance and economic issues, protecting our environment and working through the unplanned events of the COVID-19 pandemic that the world has had to deal with.  Larry plans to establish even more communications with the citizens of Los Gatos in a more transparent way which is more paramount today than it has ever been.  The safety of our citizens is also Larry’s top priority as the events that are unfolding day by day are even more relevant.  Keeping and maintaining our local Police is a must and Larry’s focus is to allow the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department's leadership to continue with progress, transparency, and pro-activeness. 

Leadership, Experience, and Values means something, and Los Gatos deserves great leadership.  With over 35 years of leadership experience Larry is dedication to the citizens and the Town of Los Gatos, Larry is committed to our community, and dedicated to progress for the Town of Los Gatos.
