My name is Gabriel Casillas and I am a Stockton native, a husband, a parish administrator, a youth minister, and a firm believer in serving others with zeal and compassion.
Being the eldest of three, raised by a single mother in a "lower" class neighborhood, I intimately learned the many challenges that a student from a single parent and a single income household faces. I was fortunate enough to break free from the many negative influences that surrounded me because of my Mother's strength and through my strong faith in God and the lessons learned through it.
I am a Stockton native with deep family, community, and faith roots. My late Grandmother, Susan Casillas, was a community leader and was the recipient of the Susan B. Anthony Award, and a Mexican American hall of fame inductee for her many works in the community. Her example of working diligently for others continues to inspire me today. My living Grandmother, Helen Aguirre, who lost two children in her lifetime and once divorced, taught me that faith in God and always doing the right thing can, and will, push you forward in life.
Taking the many lessons learned through my family and my faith, I have had the privilege of leading my community for the past 3 years as a Parish Administrator and working directly with our youth, alongside my Wife, as a Youth Minister and Religious Educator.
I am also an active member of the Knights of Columbus and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Through the different organizations I am involved with, I take part in feeding the homeless, providing resources to families in need, supporting many other non-profits including The Children’s Home of Stockton, Parents by Choice, The Woman’s Shelter, The Special Olympics, Disaster Relief, and many more.
I truly believe in serving others before myself, and I only wish to help serve the future of our society- our students.
Through my own upbringing and my work with students, struggling families and the homeless, I have seen the many challenges that society faces today. Our students are the cornerstone of the community and we must do whatever it takes to help our youth move forward and beyond the many negative situations they find themselves in. We cannot allow students to fail and we must address every challenge that stands in their way of success.
