Getting the educational services we deserve
Delta College is the gateway to a successful future. Engaged leadership has been lacking for years; now is the time to make a change.
Who am I?
I have lived in Calaveras County since 1990, in San Joaquin County the previous 6 years. I have taken and taught classes at Delta College, as has my daughter – it is a fine institution that deserves support. My background in non-profit fiscal management will be an asset on the Board.
I believe my background is uniquely suited to serve on a Board of higher education. I have an Masters in Agricultural and Managerial Economics from UC Davis and have worked in non-profit fiscal management for over 20 years – mostly for low-income populations such as that served by Delta College (Head Start, child care subsidy, emergency food and housing, energy assistance and more).
For 5 years, I taught vocational accounting and business courses at the non-profit Heald Business College, as well as a few courses at Delta and Humphreys College.
I have a strong work ethic, as demonstrated by the many volunteer efforts I have taken part in: editing Connections newspaper for over 20 years, coordinating Stockton’s Earth Day Festival for over 15 years, and serving on many non-profit boards.
What will I do?
We need a presence in all Area 5 school districts – in outreach and in actual provision of class time and virtual learning on-line.
I will reach out to whatever extent is allowed to make sure that our local districts are working hand in hand with Delta College, educating our local students in as many classes as are feasible.
When going door-to-door running for County Supervisor, I heard many complaints about the lack of Delta College classes available – as constituents cited their property tax bill that included Delta bond payments. The main reason I am running is to increase Delta’s presence in Area 5.
Delta College can make a difference
The lack of decent-paying jobs is the main barrier to our disadvantaged populations. Racism and discrimination amplify this problem and must be attacked – both through systemic change and positive reinforcement of good policies going forward. Delta College should always be the community standard in providing non-discriminatory service, while encouraging enrollment of underserved communities through extensive outreach and marketing. We have the opportunity to lead in our community - now is the time to make meaningful change in the lives we touch. I will work hard to unlock the potential of Delta College.
