My Top 3 Priorities

  • The Community Service District must be a strong watchdog for Isla Vista development issues. "Nothing About Us Without Us!"
  • The Community Center must be fully developed and encourage robust and healthy community culture. The District must be at the forefront of this renaissance.
  • An empowered tenant mediation program, accessible to all residents, must be created.

Fr. Jon Hedges came to Isla Vista and UCSB in 1968. In addition to his pastoral studies, he has a BA from UCSB in Cultural Anthropology. The Campus and Community Pastor at St. Athanasius Orthodox Church, he serves as volunteer Chaplain with several law enforcement agencies. A Certified Crisis Chaplain and Certified Trauma Responder (CTR) trained as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), he has collaborated and consulted with several Santa Barbara County agencies on homelessness, crisis, trauma and disaster issues.

Fr. Jon was deployed by Red Cross to Louisiana early in September of 2005 after Hurricane Katrina and then detached to serve on the streets with the New Orleans Police and other responders. In 2011 he led the Red Cross chaplain team after the Joplin tornado. He is frequently called with first responders to major incidents: Isla Vista 2001 and 2014, Goleta Post Office 2006, Granite Mountain Hotshots 2013 and many others.

He also identifies with the chronic, day-to-day disaster of our neighbors experiencing homelessness and has worked outreach for the County and with the St. Brigid Fellowship, Doctors Without Walls and many other collaborations. He has served on the Boards of the Community Action Commission and Doctors Without Walls.

Jon and his wife have resided in Isla Vista over forty-five years. They have two children and six grandchildren.

Political Philosophy

Civic service is a high calling and a duty of citizenship. For me, such service begins with love for our beautiful community. The one who serves must be able to encourage beyond the boundaries of partisanship to build consensus.

Measures E and F present the community of Isla Vista with an opportunity to do just that: to build an empowered community culture with services that meet local needs. “Nothing more about us without us!” Perhaps that is why the Author of Assembly Bill 3 asked me to run for the Isla Vista Community Service District that is created and defined by his bill. I am persuaded that the promise of this measure will encourage a healthier Isla Vista than we have seen in decades’ past.

If I have earned the trust of my neighbors, I will serve them faithfully as we together see the fulfillment of the promise of AB3 for the community we love.
