Most Americans are progressive on most issues. By margins of at least two to one, our fellow citizens: believe corporations and upper-income people are paying too little in federal taxes; oppose repealing the federal estate tax; support the idea that the federal Medicare program should negotiate prescription drug prices directly with pharmaceutical companies; want federal action to address global warming; would require auto manufacturers to make cars more energy efficient; favor licensing and registration of handguns; think labor unions are necessary to protect workers; and do not want the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. I believe that when we stand up and let people know our principles and where we stand on the issues; when we connect our principles and values with the liives of everyday Americans they will begin to see that status quo as not working for them and demand more from their government. When we are able to describe our vision for America in words average citizens understand—a picture of a nation that promotes peace, justice and widespread prosperity—the promise of America may finally be fulfilled.
