Ever since I was a kid, I could see there was such a thing as white privilege. Although it took me years to understand what it was, I have always been one to stand up for everyone. Especially those in need. To my early years playing baseball I understood that the team could only be as good as the sum of its parts. Similar values where instilled in me as a member of the Boy Scouts. Serving others was something that I was emulating from my parents.
Whether it was serving in local PTA, Chicago Region PTA, Illinois PTA State Board, and currently teach leadership development classes at the Illinois and National PTA conventions, my parents have served in PTA for 40+ years. I served as one of two Illinois PTA State Board High School Student Representatives for two years. This is where I was introduced to the way our government worked. Aside from my paper route, my first job was as a lifeguard for the Chicago Park District. This was my job throughout high school. Being a union member at such an early age really instills in you the value and need there is for organized labor.
My parents both served on the boards of the various churches we were members of throughout the years. Watching my parents produce, direct and star in several plays at our churches over the years made me want to get on stage.
I was a part of Explorer Troop 2960 for 6 years, starting in 7th grade, where we traveled around to various retirement homes and lodges to perform Broadway shows for the elderly. We also put on a yearly show to raise money for our Troop. From there I decided to pursue my college degree in Theatre Design and Technology from Northern Illinois University.
After I left for college my Mom began to also volunteer her time at the Field Museum of Natural History. She just celebrated her 25th year as a volunteer at the museum. My Dad only has 15 years under his belt. While my Mom volunteered all her time and made money selling Avon my Dad worked for the City of Chicago for 29 years and then the CTA for 6 years after serving in Korea with the Army. They were always showing my sister and I what it means to serve others.
It was Halloween 2002 when I started my career in Real Estate Management. I worked my way up Macerich to end up training at Stonewood Center in Downey for a period before being sent to the Mall of Victor Valley in Victorville. It was there that I oversaw a $10M mall renovation project that included raising the old theatre and building the first stadium theatre in the High Desert. Becoming Property Manager of the Mall of Victor Valley was the first position in which I was interviewed by the press and worked with all the key stakeholders in the community in order to see our project through with the necessary community support and city approvals.
I enjoyed going through this process as it began my career towards politics. Ensuring that you have the local police, firefighters, and all other city agencies working in partnership is key to what these projects need to come in on time and within budget. An effective government, no matter where, serves the people.
I encountered and engaged in another ideal situation where I was able to represent my company to Council District 8, the CRA – Community Redevelopment Agency, CAC – Community Action Committee, Crenshaw Chamber of Commerce, LAPD, LAFD and was a board member of the BID (Business Improvement District) Board while Assistant General Manager of Baldwin Hills Crenshaw. I also oversaw the renovation of the Magic Johnson Theatre into stadium theatres along with one XD screen that was done as a part of the $35M mall property renovation. Working with all the different community organizations gave me a greater perspective and understanding of what my job needed to be as I was constantly out in the neighborhoods listening to the community.
I again found my way back into politics when I joined CIM Group as Assistant General Manager for Hollywood and Highland. I was able to work with both CD4 and CD13, CRA, BID, LAPD, LAFD, Mann’s Chinese Theatre, as a voting member of the CD13 Street Closure Committee and Hollywood Walk of Fame repair committee. I saw another level of security while being the Hollywood and Highland on site property contact for the 86th Academy Awards. The appreciation and new-found respect I have for the Oscars and the undertaking they pull off in amazing fashion every year is beyond anything else you would see.
When I joined twitter in 2009, that was the beginning of my engagement as a casual citizen to someone who was considering running for office. This isn’t some last-minute decision, even though I acknowledge it was a last-minute decision on my part. This is 15 years of work I have put in that has continued to compel me to want to run for United States House of Representative for #The29th Congressional District in California. I feel that I can be an effective leader for the Democratic party and further causes that will be of benefit to all parties and all Americans. I am ready to serve We The People.
