Biography

As a long-time business owner, a single father who raised two sons in Contra Costa County, and a public official, I understand the issues that matter to Contra Costa families. I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to serve as your representative.

Whether it was balancing California’s budget, establishing the fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel, securing funding for projects like eBART and traffic relief projects like the Highway 4 expansion, or holding government accountable when millions were wasted on the Bay Bridge, I’ve fought for our families and communities.

In just 5 years as your Member of Congress, I held 100 town halls and office hours, responded to over 505,000 constituents, and helped more than 4,500 people navigate government problems. I am proud the nonpartisan Congressional Management Foundation recognized our office as a model in Congress for excellence in constituent service, transparency, and accountability. In a highly partisan environment, I've found commonsense solutions – successfully passing 28 initiatives into law and 19 measures in the U.S. House.

In Congress, I am also fighting to:

  • Hold President Trump accountable;

  • Protect Medicare and Social Security, and increase access to affordable health care coverage;

  • Ensure students receive a quality education and are not strapped with crushing debt;

  • Safeguard the environment and combat climate change.

Questions & Answers

Questions from League of Women Voters of California (3)

What financing method(s) would you support to repair or improve roads, rails, ports, airports, the electrical grid, and other infrastructure in the U.S.?
Answer from Mark DeSaulnier:

The Highway Trust Fund no longer has sufficient funds to address the needs of this nation’s infrastructure. I support innovative solutions that ensure that all contributors to the erosion of our infrastructure pay their fair share.

What programs or legislation, if any, would you support to help Americans of all ages to secure affordable health care?
Answer from Mark DeSaulnier:

One of the biggest challenges facing patients today is sky-high costs for prescription drugs and surprise medical bills, making many families have to choose between seeking help from a doctor or paying their rent. I strongly support efforts to put patients over profits and limit prescription drug prices and decrease medical bills.

Describe an immigration policy that you would support if presented to the House of Representatives.
Answer from Mark DeSaulnier:

Our immigration policy should reflect the values of our nation. I support legislation like the DREAM Act to provide a permanent solution and pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, whose lives and well being were put in danger by the Trump Administration. We must also address the backlog in our immigration court system and hold the Trump Administration accountable for its violations of law, like its unlawful continuation of the family separation policy and indefinite detention. We are the land of the free and the home of the brave: immigrants, asylum seekers, refugees, and everyone else should see that in the way they are treated.

Political Beliefs

Political Philosophy

Throughout my time in public service, my work has been largely centered on two things: restoring the public’s trust in government and addressing inequality. Both of these important ideals can be seen in the bills I introduce, the committees I sit on, and the work I do every day for Contra Costa families. The American people need and deserve a government that works for, not against them.
