I grew up in northern New England during the 60s and 70s, rooted in its politics of ecology and community. Even the horizon was close, but with the coming of public radio it was possible to trace the spread of these politics. On the eve of Bernie Sanders’ success in Vermont harmonizing Left with the Right, I swapped places with him in the Big City of Chicago, learning ward politics volunteering on the campaigns of Harold Washington and Carol Moseley Braun. From writing political letters in high school to foreign despots, to practicing biostatistics professionally in service of public health and epidemiology, local action has always been my life.
I have organized within every neighborhood I’ve known, literal and figurative – via Mar Vista neighborhood association and its Community Council (a CoLA NC), as a neighborhood watch and block-captain; among fellow students of the schools I attended (UChicago, Penn, NYU, USC), and with parents of my now-college-aged children’s schools and extracurricular activities (athletics, music), from their infancy (La Leche League Leader) to high school (LAUSD/PTA). Common to all organizations in my experience, big and small, is a partisan tenacity that can divide the community into intransigence or worse, insincerity. In my experience the best way forward is through honest, reciprocal communications. I would like to see our County’s Democratic party more faithfully represent the needs and values of ordinary citizens – me and my progressive neighbors.
As parent, organizer, and biostatistician, I write about the intersection of these personal perspectives at CityWatchLA.com and LA Progressive. For example in weathering multiple cancers from adolescence on and receiving emergency treatment from Health Canada during a sabbatical year, I can attest personally to the imperative of single payer healthcare. I believe our government should protect its people and their health, including the physical environment and political society in which we all operate. This includes our schools which are integral to the health of our Commons. Children’s educational needs must be protected from commercial interests with its winner-take-all constraints. Equality of opportunity is at the core of a healthy democracy.
I appreciate your support as a member of Assembly District 54’s Democratic Party County Central Committee. I hope to represent the experience of people just living their lives, raising their children and trying to stay healthy out here. Thank you.
