Political Beliefs

Political Philosophy

My name is Tonya D. Love. I’m running to increase the representation of young Black women from Oakland in the Alameda County Central Committee. There are not enough people of color on the Central Committee helping to make key decisions that affect all the residents of our county. I want to change that.

I am a 20-year resident of Oakland. Oakland is my home. I care about the residents who live here and want to make sure that all our voices, needs, and concerns are heard. Particularly the voices of low-income communities of color who aren’t typically in the room when decisions are made on their behalf.

I’ve worked for the California Assembly for 3 years as a legislative representative for AD 18. I also serve on the Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Community Advisory Board since August 2017 and am now Vice-Chair. I’ve advocated in Oakland for affordable housing, tenant protections, justice from police use of force, support fair and living wages for Oakland workers and increased civic participation.

I care about the lack of affordable housing for all incomes and tenant protections. I will fight for all residents’ right to live, work, and stay in Alameda County.

I care about the over-policing of Black and Brown bodies and will fight for the right for us to exist without fear.

I care about our environment and making sure that low-income communities get the benefit of clean air, fresh and uncontaminated water, clean energy, clean streets, and safe parks, which seems to be a privilege that only the wealthy can enjoy.

I care about students right to a great education, no matter their income or zip code.

I care about everyone having access to health care and reducing health disparities.

I care about justice for everyone in our community, no matter their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation.

Finally, I care about community engagement and participation. I want to increase access to Democratic Party and support practices and policies in Alameda County that promote equity and justice.

I believe that everyone in the community has a right to be heard and included. Disenfranchised communities aren’t always at the table. We serve everyone when we prioritize the ones most in need. I will ensure that everyone will have the right to help shape decisions made on their behalf. Community will come first for me.
