Presiding Justice Bigelow has been a justice on the Court of Appeal for 10 years. Before her appointment to the Court of Appeal, she was a trial judge for 10 years on the Los Angeles Superior Court, where she presided over civil and criminal trials. In 2015, she was the co-recipient of the Bernard S. Jefferson Award for distinguished service to judicial education from the California Judges Association. in 2014, she was awarded Ronald M. George Award of Excellence, which honors members of the judiciary for their extraordinary dedication to the highest principles of the adminsitration of justice statewide. She was Dean of the annual judicial college from 2006 to 2008, where she was responsible for overseeing the eduation of all newly-appointed judges in California. Before becoming a judge, Presiding Justice Bigelow was a prosecutor. She has co-authored three treatises: Sex Crimes: California Law and Procedure, Sentencing California Crimes, and California Three Strike Sentencing.

About this office
Judges in the higher courts get into office and stay in office in a different way than other elected officials. Judges for the Supreme Court are appointed and then confirmed. Voters are asked to vote on whether to keep the judge after confirmation, and again after every twelve years.
