If elected, how much time and energy will you be able to devote to this volunteer position over the next four years, given your other personal and professional obligations?
Respuesta de Luke Tesluk:
I will dedicate the time necessary to enact real change and succeed. I’m no stranger to serving in leadership positions and the time commitment they require. I have been a member of the State Party’s Voter Services committee for two years, and at this time, I have attended every phone conference and meeting, and have one of the best attendance records of any member. Most importantly I believe in being an active participant and contributing to the body while collaborating in shared governance with my fellow members. I served in the Associated Student Government while enrolled at Sonoma State University, which included serving on university committees with faculty and staff, managing the budget, and writing legislation. I did all of this as a full-time student. For the past several years, I have been enrolled as a student at Palomar College while working on and volunteering for campaigns, and I’m used to long hours. These experiences have taught me the importance of managing my time efficiently, planning ahead, and following through. I have demonstrated success juggling professional and personal obligations, and I am confident I will be able to give this position the time and attention necessary to enact real change and engage voters to best represent their voices on the central committee.
What is the most significant challenge facing this party in the next decade, and if you are elected, how will you help the party prepare to meet it?
Respuesta de Luke Tesluk:

I think our most significant challenge is engaging voters on issues impacting their lives, and especially on local issues in their community. We certainly need to defeat Trump in 2020, but we need to think beyond that if the party is to succeed in the long run.

As the saying goes, all politics is local. Most of the time, if you speak with someone they will know the president, but not city council members or the water board.

The question is: how do we change this?

We need to be representing local voices and engage voters on the issues impacting their everyday lives, and that's one of the reasons I’m running for central committee: to be a voice for the people in this district, to bring a fresh perspective to the Central Committee, and to represent people who are overlooked.

I would start by going to community groups and attending their meetings. I think this creates the opportunity to have useful conversations about community successes and concerns. I would strive to keep community members updated on what is happening on the central committee, which is something many people may not be aware of. Having this conversation would help lay the foundation for higher engagement and success.

What public figures, past and present, do you believe have given the most postive examples of what this party stands for? Please explain your reasons for thinking so.
Respuesta de Luke Tesluk:
What public figures, past and present, do you believe have given the most positive examples of what this party stands for? Please explain your reasons for thinking so. The Democratic Party is known as the party of the people. People who have given the most positive examples of what the party stands for are the activists and volunteers, those knocking on doors, calling voters, making sure their elderly neighbor has a ride to the polls on Election Day. These individuals are the best of the party and what we stand for as Democrats. In my opinion, the countless activists who have come generations before, paving the way for equality and justice, along with young, up-and-coming activists like the kids in Parkland are the face of the Democratic Party. There is a woman in my democratic club, Pat, who, at the age of 70, knocks on doors during every election. She has done this for the past 30 years in 4 states. She and others like her, inspire me and are an example of the Democratic Party at its best. I once spoke with a woman while on the phone banking, about her work fighting for 18-year-olds right to vote which (paved the way for my work in 2020). Her mother was a suffragist who was beaten and jailed so women could have the right to vote. Both women are among many activists who have fought for a better future, whether they were suffragists, the LBGTQ community at Stonewall, or the men and women of the labor movement, giving their time, dedication, and sometimes much more for the promise of a better tomorrow. I am honored to carry the torch, stand in solidarity with these volunteers and activists, and continue the work of activists in the past and present of the Democratic party.
