I'm a 23-year-old college student, youth organizer, and a proud gay man. I was born to active-duty military parents, a Marine father and an Airman mother, and grew up right here in North County. I moved around a lot being a military brat, but my family moved back to Camp Pendleton in 2008 and finally settled down in Oceanside. I went on to graduate from Vista High School in 2015 and enrolled at MiraCosta College in 2016 to study East Asian Studies.

It was at MiraCosta that I started to get involved in politics and realized that young people could actually make a difference. I founded the Democrats of MiraCosta College and started interning and volunteering for our local Democratic candidates. Since then, I've turned youth organizing into my full time passion and was elected South State Regional Director for the California Young Democrats and President of the North County Young Democrats. I'm proud of the work I've accomplished these past couple years mentoring and engaging young people, including founding Democratic clubs at six colleges and four high schools.

Preguntas y Respuestas

Preguntas de The League of Women Voters San Diego (LWVSD) and the League of Women Voters of North County San Diego (LWVNCSD) (3)

If elected, how much time and energy will you be able to devote to this volunteer position over the next four years, given your other personal and professional obligations?
Respuesta de Kyle Bright:

If elected to Central Committee, my responsibilities would overlap with the youth organizing work I'm already doing. I would continue to devote that same time and energy to building a bigger and better San Diego County Democratic Party.

What is the most significant challenge facing this party in the next decade, and if you are elected, how will you help the party prepare to meet it?
Respuesta de Kyle Bright:

Once we defeat Trump in November, our Party has to keep up the same level of voter enthusiasm, engagement, and organizing that we have seen over the past four years. In the past, those efforts would drop off after an election - leading to communities and constituencies feeling taken advantage of or ignored. The San Diego County Democratic Party of the future can't keep playing by that same old rulebook. We have to rethink politics and start putting in the hard work every day to build relationships, educate voters, and develop organizations and networks. All of those efforts are going to be critical if we want to remain relevant as a party and not lose entire generations of voters. That's why I have devoted the past four years of my life mentoring young voters and expanding our Democratic Party to college and high school campuses all over San Diego.

What public figures, past and present, do you believe have given the most postive examples of what this party stands for? Please explain your reasons for thinking so.
Respuesta de Kyle Bright:

This is probably my favourite question I've been asked on this campaign so far.

Your school years tend to be some of the worst in your life and that's especially true when you're LGBTQ+. Like a lot of young gay kids, I tried to change myself and make myself less "feminine". Five years later, I've learned to accept myself though and I've realised just how much I love my femininity and how much I admire the women around me. It's no surprise then that my ideas of what our Party should be like, and what qualities make a good leader, are shaped by the strong women who raised me and mentored me.

I believe that the Democratic Party is the party of the people and that our job as Democrats is to fight for compassion, equity, and progress every single day. That's why I look to Senator Elizabeth Warren, future Congressmember Sara Jacobs, and Vista City Councilmember Corinna Contreras for what it means to be a Democrat. All three of them pour their heart and souls into making other people's lives better and always put people over profit. They lead with compassion and grace even when faced with injustice or setback. And no matter what challenges they come up against, they get back up and keep fighting for us. Their politics are the politics of kindness, of hope, and of unashamed femininity.

If elected, that is the compassionate Democratic Party and bright future I want to build together with you.

Filosofía política

Looking back on my life, I'm incredibly grateful to have had the role models and influences I did. My father taught me the importance of serving others and the duty we have to our country. My mother taught me the importance of humility, forgiveness, and compassion. Those values were pretty sorely tested though growing up as a young, autistic, gay boy in a working-class community. I saw more injustice and cruelty at the hands of ignorant people and politicians than any kid should ever have to see. I could have walked away from all of that bitter and disillusioned. Instead I became even more determined to live by the values my parents taught me and the teachings of my Jain faith.

It's why I became a Democrat when I turned 18.

It's why I put compassion at the heart of my political philosophy.

And it's why I fight for equity, justice and progress every day.
