Biografía

I’m running to protect working families like mine, who are endangered species in San Francisco. I’m running to ensure my daughter can afford to live in the city she’s being raised in. I’m running to expand opportunities for our students, and services for our seniors. I’m running because I want the Sunset to be affordable for families, and a safe, serene, beautiful neighborhood, with thriving communities and small businesses, where residents have a voice in the decisions that impact their lives.

I came to San Francisco 30 years ago, drawn by its diversity, values, and strong sense of community. Thirteen years ago, my wife Cecilia and I came to the Sunset District to raise our daughter, Lian.

My father immigrated from China and raised me to value hard work and serving the community. He is why I studied Conservation at UC Berkeley and devoted my entire career to expanding access to good jobs, education, housing, and healthcare.

I am the co-founder and Executive Director of the non-profit Jobs with Justice San Francisco, a coalition of over 30 labor, community and faith-based organizations, where I work hard to improve the living and working conditions of families, seniors, students, and immigrants.

I've worked and won for our communities, yet everything that brought me to San Francisco decades ago seems to be disappearing. Opportunities for working families like mine are going extinct.

As Supervisor, I will work to expand those opportunities—for all of us. I will bring my decades of experience listening to the community, building diverse coalitions, and winning big for working families. On Day One, I'll be ready to fight for San Francisco, for the Sunset District, and for you."

Preguntas y Respuestas

Preguntas de League of Women Voters of San Francisco (3)

What do you see as the biggest challenge in your district, and what would you do to address it?
Respuesta de Gordon Mar:

Public safety is one of our bigggest challenges. We all deserve to feel safe in our homes and neighborhoods, without fear of crime disrupting our communities. Strong communities are safe communities, so I will emphasize building trust between police officers and the communities they serve, and dedicating resources so crimes in the Sunset get the attention they need.

My 4-point platform to reduce crime in the Sunset District includes:

1. Expand foot and bike patrols

2. Increase the number of bilingual officers

3. Explore opening a police substation on Irving Street

4. Expand Neighborhood Watch Program

What experience or qualifications do you have that make you well suited for this role?
Respuesta de Gordon Mar:

For three decades, I helped win landmark victories for good jobs, education, healthcare, and housing in San Francisco. I am the co-founder and Executive Director of Jobs with Justice, a coalition of over 30 unions, community, and faith-based groups. I've lived in the Sunset for 13 years with my wife, Cecilia, and my daughter, Lian.

I have a strong track record of bringing people together and building coalitions to get big things done, championing innovative policies and working with the Board of Supervisors, City departments, and neighborhood leaders to implement them. I was a key leader in campaigns that:

• Saved City College from closure and made it tuition-free

• Expanded home-care services for seniors, including the Support At Home program

• Raised San Francisco’s minimum wage – twice, in both 2003 and 2014

• Passed the Retail Workers Bill of Rights to promote full-time jobs and predictable schedules

• Created good jobs for San Franciscans by ensuring large companies hire locally

• Increased school funding and pay for teachers and school workers

• Rebuilt St. Luke’s Hospital to preserve vital healthcare services for underserved communities

What are your priorities when it comes to housing and affordability issues in your district and what solutions do you propose to address them?
Respuesta de Gordon Mar:
San Francisco should be a city for all kinds of families, where people can raise children and age in place. As a father, I want to ensure my daughter—and all our children— can stay in the community where they are raised. There are immense opportunities for housing that is affordable in San Francisco, including the Sunset. We can build a neighborhood where diverse people get their everyday needs met, feel stable and secure, and thrive across generations. My housing platform is comprehensive, community-driven, and fits who we are as Sunset residents.

  • Building housing that’s truly affordable

  • Incentivize homeowners to build In-Law units

  • Address rental housing affordability

  • Create a Community Plan for the Sunset
