BERNIE RHINERSON, MPA
Board Member, San Diego Community College District
An Experienced Advocate For Our Community Colleges
To keep our local economy healthy and growing, we need experienced and committed leadership to guarantee that San Diego’s Community Colleges continue to provide the education and job training that will prepare students to compete for 21st Century jobs.
As a College Trustee I have been a tireless advocate on behalf of more than 100,000 students who rely on Mesa College, City College, Miramar College and our Continuing Education campuses. For many students, community college is their only affordable access towards a college degree. For others, community college is where they learn job skills or, in times of economic dislocation, where they can be retrained to re-enter a challenging job market.
- I have worked to strengthen academic and career technical programs. Our career technical programs must also be linked to real world job opportunities.
- I have worked to restore classes, add faculty and expand degree programs. I have supported the restoration of courses making our community colleges more accessible. I supported new faculty and expansion of programs to help our students transfer to four-year colleges. I advocated for more high school community college classes and for the creation of a four-year degree program.
- I bring experience in education, business, and in the community and I will: Fight for adequate education funding; Advocate for more student support programs; Build stronger partnerships with businesses and collaborate with other educational institutions; and Be a Fiscal Watchdog. Education dollars are tax dollars and they must be spent efficiently to educate students.
Since I was first elected in 2012 I have served as Board Vice President. I was also elected as a Board Member of the national Association of Community College Trustees and I serve as the Chair of the California League of Community Colleges Legislation Committee.
My professional experience includes more than 20 years as an adjunct faculty teaching Public Administration, Public Policy and Leadership at San Diego State University; former Chief of Staff at the San Diego Unified School District; and more than 30 years as a public relations profesional and small business owner. I have also been a speaker at national conferences on the topics of Board Governance and leadership and published several srticles on the role of Boards in community college governance.
