My name is Yvette Gaytan. I am a City of Commerce native of 40 years, a first-generation American. I am the daughter and granddaughter of Mexican immigrants. I am a mother to two lovely daughters. I am a Certified Paralegal, Notary Public, and your candidate for City Council. 

Through this pandemic, many of us and our neighboring businesses have experienced hardships and struggles along with our City of Commerce. We face unprecedented challenges ahead as we strive to return to “normal.”  In these uncertain times, we need modern thinking civic leaders that will represent our community and their needs, produce progressive ideas, and implement all-encompassing policies and programs that will benefit our residents and business alike.  

I will be a council member that cares about making local government more inclusive and accessible, I will take a proactive approach to address the safety and financial security of the City of Commerce.

I am passionate about making the City of Commerce a better place for our families. I humbly ask for the opportunity to be your advocate and representative at City Hall.

Alfonso Garate is a lifelong resident of the City of Commerce having made it his home for the past 47 years.  Alfonso has first-hand knowledge of the many benefits that Commerce residents enjoy through city programs and resources and is committed to enhancing these programs for their continued success.  He is also aware of the needs and challenges facing the city and his neighbors and would like to be part of the solution, which is why he has decided to run for city council.  

Alfonso believes that it is important to elect officials who have a firm understanding of business in order to stimulate economic development and increase revenue sources for the city and its residents.  As a successful business owner of 22 years who has employed many professionals including residents, he will work diligently to bring prosperity back to the local economy by implementing business friendly policies that encourage business development, foster continued economic growth and create employment opportunities that will provide living wages.     

Alfonso was fortunate to become a homeowner through hard work and perseverance, and as a home owner he is wholly invested in the success of his neighbors and his community.  Alfonso is fully committed to exploring attainable housing options for all individuals in order to thrive during these times of economic uncertainty so that no commerce family is left without a roof over their heads.    

As a State Certified Interpreter, Alfonso has also been an advocate for the blue collar, Spanish speaking community for years.  He is mindful of the many challenges that face our mono-lingual, immigrant community, which is why he has taken it upon himself to advocate on their behalf.  Alfonso is passionate about serving others and has dedicated his entire life to assisting those who do not have a voice.    

Alfonso believes that together, The Model City, will remain the best place to live, work and raise a family, and he looks forward to confronting and solving problems and building community and expanding opportunities.  He hopes that you will join his wife, children, grandchildren, family and friends as he proudly steps into this role and humbly asks for your support.
