Questions & Answers
Questions from League of Women Voters of California and Elect Justice CA (2)
Does your office have any plans to include currently or formerly incarcerated people in your decision-making process as it relates to criminal justice issues? What would that look like?
Answer from Tony Kranz:
No plans at this time, although I would welcome formerly incarcerated people to apply for service on the city commissions.
With 8,000 people eligible for release from CA prisons to help stem the transmission of COVID-19, how, if at all, would your office aid these Californians and their families in navigating reentry?
Answer from Tony Kranz:
This is not something that I would see the City of Encinitas getting involved with, though I would expect resources for transitional purposes would be made available by the state and County of San Diego.
Questions from League of Women Voters San Diego (3)
What action (personal or professional) that you have taken most exemplifies how you would execute the duties of the office you are running for?
Answer from Tony Kranz:
During my two terms (almost eight years) of service on the city council, the core services of providing for public safety and roads in good shape have continued over the years. We have also been building more sidewalks for kids to get to school safely, walking and bike trails, rebuilt the Marine Safety Center and playground at Moonlight Beach, as well as a new park in Leucadia. This is the type of work I will continue to do in the next term.
What are the three biggest challenges facing this region in the decade of the 2020s, and how would you use this office to help our community prepare for (and meet) those challenges?
Answer from Tony Kranz:
Climate change is one. This region continues to struggle with providing options other than the use of a car to travel. I have been working at the North County Transit District to improve both bus and rail services and there are now seven new locomotives in the pipeline to replace the entire fleet of engines serving the Coaster line. All the passenger cars will be re-built, as well as two new sets added. This will make it possible to run trains every 30 minutes during peak periods and every hour off-peak. Increasing the frequency of trains and busses is critical to attracting more riders. We are also piloting programs known as "micro transit," where the vehicle isn't on a fixed route, but runs more like a public transit uber/lyft service.
The housing crisis is another. As a region, we need to do a better job of building affordable housing in each city. As it stands now, low wage jobs in our city can only be filled by people living outside our community due to the lack of affordable housing close to the job. That usually means the employee needs to drive to their job and that exacerbates the traffic tie-ups that plague our city. To solve this problem will take a concerted regional effort to help break through the challenges of finding places to build the appropriate multi-family housing
Finally, related to the issue above, is the issues of homelessness and mental health. These are problems that need strong leadership at the county level, as the county has the Public Health Department services to offer. The city will continue to work with the Community Resource Center and the Faith-Based organizations in our community to ensure that there are resources available to the less fortunute among us.
How do your plans to address the many causes and impacts of homelessness balance the rights and needs of all?
Answer from Tony Kranz:
The issues of homelessness and mental health need our attention. These are problems that need strong leadership at the county level, as the county has the Public Health Department services to offer. The city will continue to work with the Community Resource Center and the Faith-Based organizations in our community to ensure that there are resources available to the less fortunute among us.
