My Top 3 Priorities
Update Newark infrastructure to be more sustainable and energy efficient.
Encourage democracy by revamping Newark's current at-large electoral system to district-based elections. District-based elections promote democracy by allowing different neighborhoods in Newark to have a direct representative.
Promote innovation when addressing complex issues like affordable housing, climate change, and a quality of life for the residents of Newark.

Biography
I have lived in Newark for over 21 years and am a product of the Newark public schools system. I attended Louis Milani Elementary, Newark Junior High and Newark Memorial High School. I have worked with the City of Newark Recreation Department since 2015 and have been a volunteer from 2013-2015. I am in my last year at the University of California, Merced studying Environmental Engineering. Since 2013, I have been involved in public service. From volunteering to working for the City of Newark and working with the City of Fremont in the summer of 2019. I have been an elected and appointed student representative during my high school and college career. I am currently the appointed Co-Lead Student Ambassador representing UC Merced in the University of California Advocacy Network (UCAN). I love to volunteer to represent my constituents no matter the location.
During my time in Newark, I have seen the city go through high and low points. As we enter the new decade, Newark will need to address complex issues like affordable housing, climate change and providing a quality of life for Newark residents. I am ready to represent Newark and guide the city into the future.

Does your office have any plans to include currently or formerly incarcerated people in your decision-making process as it relates to criminal justice issues? What would that look like?
Answer from Jason Miguel:
Individuals who have done their time for the crime they committed should be welcomed back to society. As a municipality, Newark should help formerly incarcerated people to transition back into society, from offering assistance programs to reestablishing their right to vote. I would want to reach out to former incarcerated people to learn about their experiences and how City Council can help them improve in society.
With 8,000 people eligible for release from CA prisons to help stem the transmission of COVID-19, how, if at all, would your office aid these Californians and their families in navigating reentry?
Answer from Jason Miguel:
Individuals who have served their time should be able to transition back into society without any hinderance from their previous experience in prison. Depending on the severity of the crime, Newark should have assistance programs for former prisoners. Prison should rehabilitate criminals to be better citizens in their community and I believe that those who have spent their time in prison deserve a second chance after their completed sentence.
