Many people go their entire lifetime not knowing their purpose, whereas I am fortunate because I know exactly why I am here: to advocate for education on behalf of students, families, and educators. From the top of my head to the soles of my feet, I am an educator. Throughout my career in the Los Angeles Unified School District, I’ve had some amazing organizing experiences. I have been at the epicenter fighting the good fight, learning many lessons, and meeting some incredible people. I have been part of movements that changed the course of education for the better. My proudest experience was serving as a lead organizer during the 2019 UTLA strike. We won; smaller class sizes, a nurse at every school, more librarians, more counselors, more psychologists, more social workers, green spaces at schools for kids to play, more services for special education, and more dignity for educators.
So, what does the next chapter of my life entail? I am running for school board and I am a 3rd-4th grade teacher for Hayward Unified School District. I am successful today because the staff in schools and the people in my community. I want to be a role model and give back to the community that has given me so much.
This past year has brought many challenges to public education. In these uncertain times, we need expert leaders skilled in education policy and instruction. We need coalition builders that bring people together. We need the school district to be transparent with their decision making and be held accountable. If there has to be budget cuts it should not be directly in the classroom. We need school leaders who will retain good educators and provide a quality education to all students. That’s me!
I am a 14-year classroom teacher, proudly endorsed by the New Haven Teachers Association (NHTA). I am a 3rd generation Union City resident and I am going to continue to fight for the next generations.
