Yvonne Yiu emigrated to the United States from Hong Kong at the age of 16. Despite the fact that English is her second language, she excelled in her classes and earned her Bachelor’s degree from UCLA as well as an MBA from Loyola Marymount University.

Yvonne has extensive experience as a financial advisor through her time at Schwab and Citibank, as well as in management as a Branch Manager at E*Trade and Regional Manager at Merrill Lynch. At Merrill Lynch, she managed 5 international branches, 53 financial advisors and $4 billion assets. In 2009, she decided to start her own Broker-Dealer, choosing her own projects and exploring areas that she was interested in, including private equity funds such as hedge funds, real-estate private funds. Yvonne is proud of her achievements and has decided that it is time to move her life in a new direction.

As a long time resident of Monterey Park, Yvonne has worked to be an active member of the community. Currently, she serves as a Member of General Plan Advisory Committee of Monterey Park 2040. In addition, she has been an emcee of over 150 events in the community in the last 15 years. She is also on the Board of Directors at Boys and Girls Club of West San Gabriel Valley and Greater Monterey Park Chamber of Commerce. Lastly, she is a Member of Morning Light Scholarship Foundation, Former Chairman of Investment Committee of Hong Kong Student Scholarship Foundation, and Former Board Member of the Hong Kong Student Scholarship Foundation and Hong Kong Student Alumni Federation.

Yvonne is running for Monterey Park City Council because she wants to dedicate the rest of her life serving the community. Yvonne will utilize her knowledge and experience in financial management to bring in new businesses and development, balance the city budget, and maximize resources for every resident. The city council cannot be biased or have any conflict of interests and should be financially independent in order to put their full efforts to service the community. Due to her valuable work-ethic and leadership skills, Yvonne will strive to exceed all expectations as a dedicated and industrious public servant.

Jennifer Love Tang is a public school teacher, grassroots organizer, and Monterey Park native. Because of her experience as an educator and activist, Jennifer believes that a diversity of voices in the political process is essential for creating policies that benefit everyone. 

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Monterey Park, Jennifer grew up in a working class immigrant household. Her father was a small business owner and her mother was a data entry clerk. As the daughter of war refugees, Jennifer learned early on how lucky she was to live in a stable, safe community. 

After graduating from Mark Keppel High School, Jennifer attended USC, where she studied English Literature and International Relations. As a college senior, Jennifer traveled to her parents’ home country of Cambodia, where she started her career as a teacher. 

In her career, Jennifer has helped narrow the achievement gap in her classroom, designed innovative technology for startup companies, engaged student-activists in the political process, and advocated for policies on Capitol Hill.

Jennifer is a former policy fellow in Mayor Eric Garcetti’s office, the current Vice President of Programs for the Monterey Park Democratic Club, and a co-founder of the grassroots organization 626 Progressives. 

She currently teaches 9th grade English and AP Literature in Huntington Park, CA.
