About Chuong Vo
Introduction
The City of Cerritos has been home for me for close to 20 years. As a young adult just starting off in a career in Law Enforcement I wanted to live in a city that values public safety. I remember driving through Cerritos and noticed how well maintained the streets, parks and residents were and I immediately knew that this was the city I wanted to call home. The very first house I saw for sale was the first house I purchased and have live there since. It was very clear to me that Cerritos valued clean streets, well maintained trees and had a high standard for their quality of life.
Being the first in my family to be a police officer was a very difficult decision for me, however being in public service was the right decision for me. 41 years ago my parents decided to flee Vietnam to seek a better future for our family. My dad left everything behind and risked our lives so that his kids can have the American Dream. After being legally sponsored to America my family settled in the Southbay. I decided to choose a career in Law Enforcement because I had a strong sense of public service. After attending UCLA for College, majoring in Biology, I went straight into the Police Academy where I matured and grew as a young adult. I have a strong sense of public safety, community and individual values.
While living in Cerritos I married my wife, Traci and eventually had two boys - Ethan and Brandon. Raising my family I remember having many great experiences and doing things in my life for the first time.
As a first time parent I remember taking my son to the Cerritos Swim Center for his first swimming lesson. While there I remember seeing a young little girl in the Men’s restroom playing in the toilet stall. I asked her if she was lost and she was unable to communicate to me where her parents were located. I brought this to the staff at the swim center and learned that they eventually released the child to another child and off they went. This was very concerning to me and inquired about their procedure to deal with lost children and the staff was not able to tell me. At this moment I wanted to make sure I was apart of the solution and turned in an application to be on the Cerritos Community Safety Committee.
As a first time ABCUSD parent, I remember my first time I walked my son to Cerritos Elementary School. I was shocked to see how many parents drove their kids to school and how dangerous the traffic around the school was for the parents and children who walked their kids. Immediately, I knew I had to get involved and develop a plan to make the traffic around the school move smoothly. I met with the principal and developed a traffic plan that allowed for better flow around the school, decreased traffic around the school and increase safety for the Parents and children while walking to school. Thirteen years later this traffic plan is still being used today.
After serving two years on the Cerritos Community Safety Committee I was then appointed to the Planning Commission. Working on the Planning Commission I developed a very strong background in Planning and Development. City’s thrive because business, residence and public safety all work together.
