Diana Reyes Williams is a candidate for Azusa city Council. Diana retired from the City of Los Angeles in 2017 after serving 31 years. She was hired on the spot by the Department of Building and Safety. She quickly promoted to the Department of Public Works where she spent 30 years working in various positions for Sanitation, Street Lighting and the Board of Public Works (BPW). She spent the last ten years of her career at City Hall working at the Board of Public Works, the only full-time Board in the City of Los Angeles. As the Executive Administrative Assistant for two commissioners at a time, she managed to do this job in addition to managing and coordinating a High School Internship Program. In collaboration with the Los Angeles Unified School District, private engineering firms and City leaders, a six week paid high school internship program was developed for high school juniors and seniors. Diana took pride in her work and career with the City of Los Angeles. It was her commitment and dedication to service that earned her recognition for Going Over and Beyond the call of duty, known as the GOBE Award. She was recognized before the Los Angeles City Council by then councilmember Tony Cardenas, currently a US Congressman, for her outstanding performance. Diana was the go-to person in Public Works and took pride in encouraging new employees to promote by sharing her experience and knowledge.
Diana was elected Vice President by her union and shortly after became President of AFSCME, Local 3672 for which she represented 120 Executive Administrative Assistants and Executive Legal Secretaries in the City of Los Angeles. As a union officer, she was instrumental in changing their job title, obtaining increased training funds and lobbied to qualify members to have equal opportunity to promote into the management series. Diana negotiated contracts, lobbied elected officials and exceeded her call to duty as a union officer. She was Vice President of AFSCME Council 36 and was elected to serve two terms on the Executive Council, responsible for contracts and a balanced budget. In this capacity, Diana represented over 20,000 members, 60 autonomous Local Unions with five regional offices across the Southland, who perform a diverse array of roles in local government, legal aid, and nonprofit social service organizations, with a common pride and dedication to public service. Throughout Diana’s career, she has demonstrated great leadership qualities and initiative. She represented thousands of City employees on the Coalition of Los Angeles City Unions and was instrumental in helping the city resolve its budget crisis during the recession of 2008. Diana has sat at the table with the Mayor and City Council of Los Angeles to work on labor/management issues. Diana is fearless and her leadership has demonstrated her passion for helping others.
Diana has been married for 28 years and has two adult children who attended school in the Azusa Unified School District. In 1998 she became a first-generation homeowner where she and her husband Richard have raised their family for the past 22 years. Diana is a businesswoman, an advocate for her community and a volunteer. Diana wants to be the change Azusa seeks. Diana seeks to be the change Azusa needs.
