I have been involved in public service since before I was old enough to vote and registered to vote as soon as I was old enough. My multi-faceted skills and organizational abilities were honed by over 35 years of business management, more than 25 years of public sector involvement, and 15 years in statewide and local government regulatory and policy-making positions. The company I created and continue to lead, Kneal Resource System, consistently created sustaining employment opportunities and my commitment to improving the lives of all people is demonstrated through active work with numerous community-benefit organizations. I am also part of a team to develop a biodiesel plant to produce an environmentally beneficial, sustainable diesel engine fuel and create new, green sector jobs.

A great deal of my time and energy are currently committed to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Center where we collaborate with educational, faith-based and community –based initiatives to advance youth and family civic engagement, ethical leadership, and economic and educational equity through personal transformation, in the East Bay Region’s most vulnerable high-poverty communities.

As a co-founder of the Oakland Fund for the Arts (recently renamed Arts for Oakland Kids), three of my passions: education, arts and community-benefit; are combined as we have delivered art education to disadvantaged Oakland schools for 24 years.

    I also:

  • Protected our environment on California Integrated Waste Management Board.
  • Stood on frontlines protecting reproductive rights on Women’s Clinic board.
  •  Increased contract opportunities for women & people of color as Oakland Port Commissioner.
  • Provided safety & security for homeless women & youth on Friendly Manor & Covenant House boards.
  • Assured vibrant parks on the East Bay Regional Parks District Foundation Board.
  • Helped create State Bar Court, leading successful effort appointing first female Chief Judge.
  • Promoted local culture on Oakland Ballet board.
  • Opposed tuition as California Community Colleges Governor.

Finally, I am active in the local Democratic Party as: Alameda County Democratic Party Corresponding Secretary; California Democratic State Party Delegate; former 15th AD Vice Chair, Alameda County Party; Member of Democratic Party’s Women’s Caucus, Environmental Caucus and African American Caucus; and creator of the “So You Think You Want to Run” Democratic Party Training.
