Biography

Roberto Uranga has represented the residents of Long Beach’s 7th Council District at City Hall since 2014.

Prior to his election to the City Council, Roberto served for 14 years as a member of the Long Beach Community College District Board. In this role, he helped create the much-heralded Long Beach College Promise program, a partnership between the college district, school district, city, and California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) to provide free college tuition to local students. In 2011, Roberto was elected President of the National Association of Community College Trustees, a non-profit organization that represents more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern over 1,200 community, technical, and junior colleges across the country.

Roberto moved to Long Beach in 1971 to attend CSULB. He worked as an assistant director for support services at CSULB for seven years before beginning a 29-year career working for the City of Long Beach. During his time with the city, Roberto worked in various departments and held positions as a Personnel Analyst, the Recruitment Officer, the Manager of Police Impounds, and the Administrative Officer for the Department of Health and Human Services.

Roberto’s long history of local community involvement includes serving as: President of the Hispanic Business Association of Greater Long Beach, and a Boardmember of the American Red Cross of Greater Long Beach. He has also volunteered time and service to the NAACP, the Youth Motivation Task Force, the Long Beach Branch of the Urban League, the Long Beach Community Partnership Committee, and the Long Beach Selective Service Board. Roberto was appointed by the State Senate to the California Coastal Commission in 2015.

Roberto’s bride of more than 33 years is former Long Beach Councilwoman Tonia Reyes Uranga. He and Tonia are the parents to three children.
