Biografía

Martin McLaughlin is the Village President of Barrington Hills, a small businessman and a financial expert running to bring his common sense private sector experience to Springfield.

Martin was elected Village President of Barrington Hills in 2013, defeating the two-time incumbent by a margin of 60%-40% despite being outspent 5-to-1. In the years prior, the Village had spent recklessly, increasing expenditures 83.5% and hiking taxes a whopping 177%. A conservative from the private sector, Martin brought business principles to a bloated local government rife with cronyism. Despite a 5-1 board opposed to his reform agenda, he successfully reduced spending, cut taxes, resolved previous legal disputes, consolidated departments, and put the village back on a path towards fiscal responsibility. In 2015, he backed a group of reform candidates, and after a 56%-44% resounding victory the new board majority is prepared to fully embrace Martin’s fiscally conservative reform agenda.

The owner and manager of a registered investment advisory firm for many years, Martin has overseen the investment of pension assets, both public and private, through some of the most turbulent financial times in history. As a named fiduciary on police, fire, and municipal pension plans, he has a unique background and experience working with leaders entrusted with public assets. His experience working with individuals, boards, actuaries and attorneys to coordinate interests and provide solutions to the public will serve the 26th District well. Furthermore, his financial expertise and ability to provide sound planning and leadership dealing with complex issues will be invaluable in Springfield.

Martin has been married to his wife, Kathleen, for 24 years. They met at Elgin Academy, where Martin attended on scholarship. He then went on to work his way through college, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Illinois Wesleyan University. He and his wife are blessed with 5 daughters, aged 21 through 9. In his spare time, Martin enjoys spending time with his family, and volunteering with various community athletic organizations serving as a trustee at The Einstein Academy.

I am running for office because I want the state of Illinois to be a place where I can affordably raise my family, continue to grow my business, and retire.

I have grown frustrated watching Springfield grind to a halt because of an inability to accept needed spending reforms and enact a balanced budget. Meanwhile, here in my village, we’ve been able to work through our differences to cut spending and taxes. It can be done, but you need strong, experienced leadership to make it happen, and that’s why I’ve decided to run for State Senate.

We need to fix our state for the sake of the “3 Rs”: remain – raise – retire.

Remain: So that businesses remain in Illinois, we attract new businesses, and we grow high-paying jobs for residents of the 26th District.
Raise: So families can raise their children in Illinois, and those children are able to start careers and find success so that they put down roots in our state.
Retire: So Illinois seniors can retire and thrive while remaining in their home state close to family and life-long friends.

I know we face a difficult task fixing our beloved state of Illinois. But I am an optimist that welcomes a challenge. I came from humble beginnings, and my wife and I have worked tirelessly to earn every penny we have and provide for our children. I was told I would never defeat the entrenched powers when I ran for Village President, yet despite being outspent 5-to-1 by the incumbent I won by nearly 20%. I was told I couldn’t use my common sense private sector experience to clean up my bloated local government rife with cronyism, yet I have successfully reduced spending, cut taxes, and put the village on a path towards fiscal responsibility.

We can fix our state, but it will require bold measures. I have led by example, and that has prepared me to serve as your State Senator. With my small business and local government experience, I know I can be part of the solution in Springfield. I have experience working with diverse parties to collaborate and achieve solutions, and have proven I can advance fiscally responsible principles in the face of opposition. I am ready to go to Springfield to fight the entrenched powers on behalf of my neighbors in the 26th District.
