Ami Bera was elected to represent Sacramento County in November 2012. A first-generation American, Ami was born and raised in California and benefited from California’s public schools, from kindergarten through medical school. He has always believed in hard work and community service—and refuses to accept a future where our children and grandchildren don’t have the kind of opportunities that he did.
After medical school, Ami put his degree to work for us, practicing medicine in several roles in the Sacramento region and eventually serving Sacramento County as chief medical officer. He used his skills as a tough negotiator to fight to reduce the cost of health care, create jobs, and deliver care to tens of thousands of Sacramento County residents.
Ami went on to become a Clinical Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Admissions and Outreach at UC Davis, where he taught the next generation of doctors to care for patients. He helped the student-run clinics find innovative ways to engage with the community and deliver care to those who needed it the most. During his time in Congress, Ami has worked to create jobs, grow the economy, and make America a better place for our next generation. Despite partisan gridlock, Ami works with colleagues from both sides of the aisle to find common ground and fight for middle-class families.
He lives in Elk Grove with his wife, Janine, who is also a medical doctor, and their daughter, Sydra.
