My name is Randy Rowse. It’s likely we met during the 37 years I owned and operated the Paradise Cafe in downtown Santa Barbara, or during my 9 years of service as your City Council Member. 

I came here in 1972 to attend UCSB as an Environmental Studies major, and never left. My wife Janet and I live in the same house on the Mesa where we’ve spent the past 36 years and raised our two children.  Throughout all these years, my passion for the vibrancy of our downtown and the natural elements of our beautiful city has not diminished.

Prior to my City Council tenure, I was active in community organizations such as the Downtown Parking Committee, the Chamber of Commerce, The Downtown Organization, Hospitality Santa Barbara and the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.  I was honored to win Volunteer of the Year from the Downtown Organization in 2010 and Business Person of the Year from the Chamber of Commerce in 2019.

 

My concern for our city and devotion to ensuring a bright and vital future led my decision to enter the race for Mayor of Santa Barbara.  While some of the chronic issues of concern remain, there are new elements that require firm leadership, energy and a commitment to non-partisan focus.  Our reemergence from the pandemic shutdown, attention to our public areas and careful stewardship of the myriad of capital projects in the pipeline are demanding priorities that must be expedited and helmed to completion.  

 

 

I would be honored by your support.  All of us who live in Santa Barbara know it’s imperative that we return to a clean, safe, healthy environment and vital economy.  Our time is now.

James Joyce III is a community leader and founder of Coffee with a Black Guy. For much of the past decade, James has served the people of Santa Barbara as District Director for State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, who represented nearly 1 million constituents within Santa Barbara and Ventura. In that role, James was responsible for the day-to-day operations representing the Senator and her work. He has worked for years on housing, income inequality, and improving opportunities for small business.

James has served on various advisory boards in the area. He was a part of the founding advisory committee for Impact Hub Santa Barbara, and has met with hundreds of local business owners in the area. He knows the needs of the community, and knows how important it is to be a champion for our local businesses: the backbone of our local economy and middle class families.

 

 

 

Into its fourth year, Coffee With A Black Guy serves as a safe place for interactive, community conversations about a variety of issues from the perspective of a Black man. It's been a growing, grassroots effort hosted by James and his team in Santa Barbara to help put an end to racism. Simply put: Coffee. Connection. Conversation. Forbes Magazine featured James and his work with Coffee With A Black Guy in a piece published during the Covid-19 outbreak. James was recognized for his outstanding leadership in aiding anti-racist conversations even during a worldwide pandemic and has served as a guest speaker for the NAACP chapter of Ventura County during their solidarity rally for George Floyd. James knows how to have hard conversations, and looks forward to bringing people together to solve Santa Barbara’s most pressing problems.

James is also on the board for the Common Table Foundation (formerly the Lois and Walter Capps Project), the California Association of Marriage & Family Therapist Education Foundation, Sanctuary Centers of Santa Barbara, as well as the national board for Student African American Brotherhood (SAAB), where he helped found the collegiate chapter while a student-athlete at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Additionally, James serves on the advisory board of the Ventura County Leadership Academy, and the Santa Barbara Young Black Professionals.

Prior to working in the public service sector, James, a Maryland-native, served as an award-winning newspaper journalist in several diverse communities across the country covering a variety of subjects; from education to crime, local politics, features and more.

As mayor, I will do everything in my power to raise the profile of the city, raise the public discourse of the city, and most importantly: raise the civic pride for every person who lives here. We need a leader who cares more about locals than political special interests. I have spent more than a decade meeting with constituents just like you and working diligently behind the scenes to make this a better community. I have seen Santa Barbara at its lowest points, and I have been a level-headed leader in times of crisis.

Our City has spent the last year in a pandemic and a recession, but I believe that better days are ahead. Santa Barbara needs a leader who knows how to have difficult conversations and build consensus, a leader who has the knowledge and expertise at the State and Federal levels to bring home as much money as we need to get back on our feet, and a leader who can bring transparency and accountability to our City. 

We can’t do it alone. We can only do it together, as a united community. 

By bringing people together, we can solve Santa Barbara’s most pressing needs. As your Mayor, I will:

• Improve community outreach

• Support our local businesses

• Ensure housing solutions that meet our needs, while respecting the character of our neighborhoods

• Protect our green spaces

• Create a more just and equitable community

Cathy Murillo is serving her first term as Mayor of Santa Barbara, having served on the City Council since 2012. Under her leadership, Santa Barbara opened a new Children’s Library, secured funding and site for a new police station, updated the city’s Bicycle Master Plan, revitalized the Westside’s neighborhood association, passed a Just Cause Eviction ordinance, established a Project Labor Agreement policy for city public works projects, focused resources on Downtown economic vitality, and formed the City’s COVID-19 Business Advisory Task Force to help businesses recover from the pandemic economy. Working with community members, Murillo created the Pro-Youth Movement in response to a gang injunction proposed by the City of Santa Barbara and to find solutions to street violence. As Mayor, Murillo convenes a biweekly teleconference with youth service providers focusing on gang prevention.

Regional assignments include Chair of the Cities-County Affordable Housing Task Group, Chair of the Homelessness Collaborative, Chair of the South Coast Youth Safety Partnership (gang prevention), past Chair of the Air Pollution Control District Board of Directors, Director of the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments, Vice-Chair of the Coast Rail Coordinating Council (SBCAG liaison), and Director of Partners in Education – a collaboration of the Santa Barbara County Education Office and the business and non-profit community.

Murillo, the first Latina ever elected to the Santa Barbara City Council, was a print and radio journalist before going into public service. She worked at UC Santa Barbara as the News and Public Affairs Director for KCSB Radio, teaching broadcast journalism to college students. Before that, she was a news editor for the Santa Barbara Independent, and news writer for the Los Angeles Times, Ventura County Edition. She has also worked in the legal profession, and taught theater arts in public schools as an artist-in-the-classroom for the Children’s Creative Project. Murillo has a B.A. in Dramatic Art from UCSB, with an emphasis in Acting.

“You can call me Mark…” It’s possible we played in the Santa Barbara City College Orchestra together or you exhibited your paintings and art at CASA Gallery during a 1st Thursday. Or, you may have served on a board or a committee with me during the last 27 years I’ve lived in Santa Barbara…

Maybe we went to graduate school together or you worked with me when you wanted to advertise in my weekly magazine — VOICE, aka Casa. As publisher, I’ve been immersed in the needs and challenges facing our community and have become in sync with the pulse of the city and its people.

Over the years I have been a member of some of this community’s most active organizations and a sponsor of many others. I was president and treasurer of the Downtown Organization and Santa Barbara Beautiful. And I serve on the PARC Foundation which oversees the Douglas Preserve and raised funds for the Cabrillo Pavilion.

I have a love for Santa Barbara that moves me to address the needs of our community.  With the urging and encouragement of numerous people over several years, I eventually decided to run for mayor of Santa Barbara.  

Collaboration and strong relationship building skills will be needed to address our community’s challenges, restore its economic vitality, and burnish Santa Barbara’s world class image after 18 months of pandemic.

I see Santa Barbara as a clean, green, safe, and inspiring place to live.

 

A down to earth midwesterner by birth, Mark Whitehurst grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, graduated from Graceland University, and then flew to Australia to teach. He returned to the States to work on the team of his brother’s newspaper in Oregon (and teach on the side!) That opportunity turned into a passion for community building via local newspapers. 

Mark relocated to Santa Barbara 27 years ago. During those years he has supported the arts and arts education, the non-profit community, and served on several non-profit boards. In addition to being Publisher and Editor of VOICE Magazine (AKA CASA) he has enjoyed being a SBCC Continuing Education Instructor.

Mark’s professional and community work have been recognized with several awards, including: General Excellence Award from Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association; Man of the Year from the Sutherlin Chamber of Commerce; Leadership in the Arts Award, with co-recipient Kerry Methner, from the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission, 2010; Citizen of the Year Award presented by the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization to CASA Magazine for being instrumental in creating and supporting the 1st Thursday monthly arts night program, 2007; Business and Art Award presented by the City of Santa Barbara Visual Art in Public Places to CASA Magazine, 2005, and the inaugeral Chancellor’s Award for Community Service from Pacifica Graduate Institute.

Mark’s family is important to him. He has been married to Kerry Methner for 22 years and he enjoys a close relationship with his brother, John Whitehurst. Mark has one son and two grandchildren, and a large extended family.

Community building is at the heart of my interest in politics and is the foundation of my political philosophy. 

I love Santa Barbara and I want to help our community burnish the beauty for which it is recognized around the world.
