Homeless at the age of sixteen in San Francisco, he noticed the alarming population of transients panhandling around Haight St. and organized them to collect donations for their own food drive. His effort grew from feeding a handful of people to over 200 a night. His success drew the attention of media and local government. The idea continued to evolve and thrive, strengthening movements such as “Food Not Bombs.”
Since that time in his life, Emory has continued to live as a civil rights and environmental activist. In 1995, he helped raise awareness of the need for alternative fuels and climate change in longest hunger strike on record – 79 days with no solid food.
Settling in Los Angeles, his hard work and dedication allowed him to prosper as an entrepreneur while continuing his work as a community organizer – including a major role in bringing art into the Venice Beach community with the Abbot Kinney Mural Project.
Inspired by Bernie Sanders’ message for social equality; Emory Rodgers has joined the fight by running for U.S. Senate in California. Like Bernie, Emory wants to see this country setting an example for the world by leading in education, public healthcare, and by creating an incorruptible political system that unbinds candidates from corporate influence and returns it to the will of the people.
It will take more than just a president to lead a political revolution. As a dedicated activist and tireless crusader for human rights, Emory Rodgers is answering a call to arms to be one of the many who will push for progressive reform throughout all levels of government.
