Funding to schools

A recent law made major changes in the way that the state allocates funding to schools.  What will you do to ensure that the public understands your local control formula for school spending and your plan to measure outcomes?

Understanding the local control formula for school spending myself will be the first step.  Finding meaningful language with which to explain it would be the second. Then, talking with people who have qustions/concerns would be the best way of helping people understand how we are funded.

Because we area basic aid district, measurements of outcomes have been on-going, and the district is, rightfully, proud of its successes. Sharing the information that has already been gathered and that which will be gathered, would be my approach to ensuring that the public understands the progress our schools have made and will continue to make.

My political philosophy is simply that we are responsible for each other.  We are meant to share ourselves and to help those less fortunate. We need to embrace each other in ways that are respectful of beliefs and of all the cultures among which we live. Finding compromise is essential if we are to move forward.  That means we need to be aware of and thoughtful of all issues that come our way.  The answer should always be, what is best for the group of people I represent.  

This, for me, implies a need for transparency, for being able to articulate problems, and for being able to work with others who maight see things very differently.  It means going out of one's own comfort level and learning to look through a different set of lenses. It means being able to say that I disagree because of the following reasons.  It also means I don't get my way on everything. It means listening actively to what is being said, both on a superficial level and on a deeper, sometimes unarticulated, level. It means answering questions people have to the best of my ability and it means always being respectful of everyone.

By creating a more welcoming environment for community particpants at District Board meetings, we can do a better job of communicating our vision, goals and objectives, as well as the intricacies of funding and measuring outcomes.

I’ve lived in Pescadero since July 1989.  I’ve been here for the disasters:  the earthquake and freeze of 1989, the flood and mudslides of February, 1998.  I have experienced first-hand how neighbors come together in times of need. 

 

Treasurer, Pescadero Foundation since 2001.  The Foundation sponsored our first big town planning workshop in 2004.  I have been very motivated to solve the affordable housing crisis in our community for teachers ever since we lost two very good teachers here in the late 90’s due to commute issues.

 

The community is now preparing for a new town planning process, and I am involved in that as well.  Again, teacher housing is one of the primary motivators for me, but the needs of farmers for workforce housing has also become critical.

Informing the public, and fostering better communication between the School District and members of the community is an important priority for me.  One approach I hope to take is participating in a local radio news show that would keep parents, teachers, and the community at large informed of any major issue being addressed by the District or within the District by its stakeholders.

The basic philosophy I bring to this position is simply to value, support and facilitate respectful and transparent communication between all involved to help solve some serious problems, including lack of funding for the programs we need, lack of certain types of support for teachers and the administration, and the lack of a process within the District for soliciting, vetting, and incorporating the willing support of nonprofits and others for school programs that would help retain students, support teachers, and relieve administrative burdens.
