Biografía
As California's senior Senator, Dianne Feinstein has focused on solving problems facing California and our nation. In June, she carried every county and won the 2018 California Primary by more than 2 million votes for reelection to the US Senate.
Her accomplishments in the Senate include legislation increasing vehicle fuel economy standards; protecting amateur athletes from sexual abuse; preserving the Mojave Desert, Lake Tahoe and our forests; consumer protection, food safety and cyber security; drought relief; securing funding for critical projects; and commonsense gun laws, including the landmark assault weapons ban.
In June, she authored the Senate's Keep Families Together Act, which was cosponsored by every Democratic Senator, to stop Trump's policy of separating children from their families at the border.
In 2017, Senator Feinstein became ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and oversees judicial nominations and its investigation of Russia's interference in the 2016 election and obstruction of justice. She also currently is a senior member of the Intelligence and Appropriations Committees.
Her career has been one of firsts - she was the first woman President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the first woman Mayor of San Francisco, the first woman elected Senator of California, the first woman member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and the first woman to be ranking member of the Committee. Dianne also was the first woman to chair the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Rules and Administration Committee.
Prior to her election to the Senate, Dianne was elected to the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors and served 2 1/2 terms as President of the Board. She became Mayor of San Francisco in November 1978 following the assassination of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk.
The following year she was elected to the first of two four-year terms. In 1987, City and State Magazine named her the nation's "Most Effective Mayor."
Today she continues to work on critical issues and fight for California's values.

I support the Senate Democrats’ Blueprint to Rebuild America’s Infrastructure, which would make key investments to improve America’s crumbling infrastructure including:
- $210 billion to repair crumbling roads and bridges.
- $180 billion to replace and expand transit and commuter rail systems.
- $65 billion to modernize ports, airports and waterways.
- $100 billion for 21st century energy infrastructure.
- $110 billion to modernize water and sewer systems.
I am a strong advocate for universal health care, and with my colleagues in the Senate, stopped the Republican attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
In 2009, when we were considering the Affordable Care Act, I sponsored legislation to create a public option to compete with private health insurance, which I continue to support. I also support lowering the age for Medicare eligibility to 55, mandating that Medicare negotiates for drug prices, which it currently does not, allowing HHS to reject unreasonable premium increases and requiring 85% of all premium dollars to go to patients, instead of 80%.
We are a state and a nation of immigrants, and I strongly oppose Donald Trump’s attacks on our immigrant communities and believe we must have comprehensive immigration reform.
I support the DREAM Act and DACA which is why I opposed the recent omnibus spending package that did not include protections for Dreamers. I also strongly oppose President Trump’s unjust and unconstitutional travel ban and have authored legislation to rescind the President's executive orders.
I was proud to work closely with Dolores Huerta and the United Farm Workers to author the Agricultural Worker Program Act to put farmworkers on a path to earned legal status and citizenship.
We must come together to pass comprehensive immigration reform, that includes a pathway to citizenship for immigrants, assistance for immigrant members of the armed services and their families, visa reform, backlog reduction, and family humanitarian relief.
In the Senate, I secured passage of $558 million in federal funding in response to California’s five-year historic drought.
I have also coauthored the bipartisan Securing Required Funding for Water Infrastructure Now Act to further modernize investments in water infrastructure while protecting our environment. The legislation would authorize an additional $200 million annually over five years to support state revolving fund projects, encourage states to bundle their projects by waiving the $100,000 application fee and preserve the successful state revolving funds and the Water Infrastructure and Innovation Act loan program.
I agree that the lack of civility is serious problem in our country right now. And as leaders in Washington, we must set a positive example for how we can overcome political division and work respectfully with a common purpose to improve the lives of all Americans.
I’m not a name caller. Throughout my career, I’ve always been willing to work with my colleagues in both parties to enact pragmatic solutions to the problems facing our state and our nation. If re-elected to the Senate, I will continue to work in a bipartisan manner on behalf of the American people.

Health Care
Universal health care.
Senator Feinstein strongly supports universal health care for all Americans, and with her colleagues in the Senate, stopped Republicans attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
In 2009, when the Senate was considering the Affordable Care Act, she sponsored legislation to create a public option to compete with private health insurance, which she continues to support. She also supports lowering the age for Medicare eligibility to 55, mandating that Medicare negotiates for drug prices (which it currently does not), allowing HHS to reject unreasonable premium increases and requiring 85 percent of all premium dollars to go to patients, instead of 80 percent.
Senator Feinstein has committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose and has earned a 100 percent rating from Planned Parenthood for standing up for women’s reproductive health choices.
As co-chair of the Senate Cancer Coalition, Senator Feinstein has also been a leader in increasing funding for disease research. She helped stop Donald Trump's plan to cut funding from the National Institutes of Health and introduced bipartisan legislation to improve breast cancer detection.
She also sponsored the Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Act, which led to an improved emphasis and strategy for research of top deadly cancers.
Immigration
Comprehensive immigration reform
We are a state and a nation of immigrants, and Senator Feinstein strongly opposes Donald Trump’s attacks on our immigrant communities and believes we must have comprehensive immigration reform.
She supports the DREAM Act and DACA, which is why she opposed the recent omnibus spending package that did not include protections for Dreamers. She also strongly opposes President Trump’s unjust and unconstitutional travel ban and has authored legislation to rescind the President's executive orders that created those bans.
She is also the author of the Keep Families Together Act, which will end the inhumane practice of separating children from their parents at our border.
Senator Feinstein was proud to work closely with Dolores Huerta and the United Farm Workers to author the Agricultural Worker Program Act to put farmworkers on a path to earned legal status and citizenship.
Senator Feinstein believes we must come together to pass comprehensive immigration reform legislation that includes a pathway to citizenship for immigrants, backlog reduction, assistance for immigrant members of the armed services and their families, visa reform, and humanitarian relief for families.
Jobs and the Economy
Creating an economy that works for all.
Senator Feinstein is committed to creating an economy that works for all Americans, not just those at the very top. She is a staunch supporter of a living wage and is a cosponsor of the RAISE the Wage Act, which would raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour.
She opposed Donald Trump’s tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations that will add more than $1 trillion to our debt and force cuts in Medicare and Social Security. This legislation further harms Californians by eliminating the deduction for state and local taxes claimed by more than six million California households.
Instead, Senator Feinstein has championed expanding economic access for working and middle class Californians. That’s why she supported the Working Families Tax Relief Act to expand access to and the value of the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.
She joined Senator Elizabeth Warren to coauthor legislation that would allow individuals with existing student loan debt to refinance at much lower interest rates. And she authored the Small Business Lending and Inequality Reduction Act, which would increase resources available for small businesses in traditionally underserved communities.
Senator Feinstein is also a proud cosponsor of the Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act,which would at long last institute paid family leave, including maternity leave. She is also a cosponsor of the Healthy Families Act which would allow employees to take paid sick days.
Finally, Senator Feinstein knows that creating an economy for all also means reducing the influence of special interests in Washington. She is a staunch opponent of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision which has opened the flood gates to unregulated dark money in our politics. She is a proud cosponsor of the DISCLOSE Act, which would help end secret campaign spending by strengthening disclosure and disclaimer requirements. And she also coauthored a proposed constitutional amendment that would overturn Citizens United once and for all.

Senator de León is the son of a single immigrant mother who supported her family in the San Diego barrio of Logan Heights working as a housekeeper and other pick-up jobs. He was the first in his family to graduate from high school and college.
He attended U.C. Santa Barbara and graduated from Pitzer College at the Claremont Colleges with honors. He is a Rodel Fellow at the Aspen Institute and a guest lecturer at the University of Southern California. He has one daughter.
Before entering into politics, Kevin served the public as a community organizer, taught English as a Second Language and U.S. Citizenship, and advocated for public schools.
Working for both the National Education Association and the California Teachers Association, Kevin fought for additional funding for schools in low-income neighborhoods, more school construction, and health insurance for children. He fought against schemes to take funds from public schools through taxpayer-funded vouchers and academic censorship in public schools.
Senator de León was elected by his colleagues to lead the Senate in 2014, making him the first Latino to hold that position in over a century. Prior to that, Kevin served four years in the Assembly before his election to the Senate in 2010.
President pro Tempore of the California State Senate
Kevin de León has led the 40-member Senate body to historic accomplishments that will improve the lives of Californians and the state’s environment and economy for decades to come.
He has ushered a bold agenda to increase economic opportunity for all Californians with a focus on maintaining California’s global leadership role in fighting climate change and building a clean-energy economy, rebuilding our state’s infrastructure, public education, work-place and health-care, equity for women, immigrants and low-wage workers and public safety.
Through his ambitious approach to policymaking, Senator de León has authored groundbreaking legislation on a variety of issues that have become national models. The progress that has been made on critical issues confronting California and the nation stands in stark contrast to the gridlock in the U.S. Congress.
In many ways, Senator de León embodies the promise of America. From a childhood of poverty to community activism, to the upper echelon of the California Legislature, his respect and commitment to working families and the betterment of all Californians has never diminished.

By most accounts, the transportation infrastructure in the United States is in serious disrepair. Nearly one fourth of U.S. bridges are deficient or obsolete. The average bridge has been in use longer than its originally prescribed lifespan (typically 50 years). Poor road conditions contribute to a third of all traffic fatalities. As roads and bridges across the country continue to age and deteriorate, governments at all levels are struggling to pay for maintenance and upkeep -- not to mention investments in much-needed upgrades and new projects. We need both short term and long term strategies to meet our infrastructure needs. Public funds and revenue streams in the form of charges, such as tolls, paid by end users need to be extended and leveraged. We need to view regular deferred maintenance and key investment as normal and no longer wait until disaster or failure. The scale of infrastructure required makes attracting private investment (including pension funds) an important consideration. I am open to any practical options to address the crisis facing our infrastructure so long as state laws and labor laws are respected and incorporated.
I believe healthcare is a human right, not an exclusive privilege of the wealthy. But premiums are skyrocketing by double digits with each passing year, leaving too many Americans agonizing over how to pay for coverage while still meeting their basic needs. It is incumbent on those who oppose Medicare for All to also explain how working families will be able to pay for the status quo. A recent study funded by opponents of single payer, showed that adopting the Medicare-for-All plan could save Americans up to $2 trillion over the next decade.
The reality is, a Medicare-for-All system is the only way to get healthcare costs under control. Switching to this system will save billions in administrative cost, give us the power to finally hold the drug companies accountable, and squeeze other savings out of the system. Americans are already paying for the cost of a single-payer system, but see none of the benefits in return. In California I led the fight for Medicare-for-All, and in Washington I will do the same. Getting it done won’t be easy, but taking on special interests never is.
Nothing has ever stopped me before from fighting for comprehensive, humane immigration reforms; so being in the Senate minority certainly won’t either. Washington, D.C. has been out of step with California on the immigration issue for many years. California has changed and our representatives in Washington DC must reflect that change.
A reformed immigration system should be clear, concise and simplified. A potential immigrant should get a decision on immigration applications within a short period of time. Reform should treat every person with dignity, fix the family visa backlog and bring millions of hardworking people into the formal economy. We need to end the three- and 10- year bars. We need to defend and make permanent the Obama executive actions—known as DACA and DAPA. We must end family detention and close private immigration detention centers. We need to promote naturalization, increase access to language programs to encourage English proficiency, and increase outreach and education to help more people navigate the process.
Climate change is having major impacts on California, with periods of intense drought and explosive wildfires followed by extremely wet seasons. Those shifts will require a comprehensive pivot in water management policy to ensure safe, adequate distribution and sufficient flood protection. While Washington has failed to act aggressively to address a growing climate crisis, here in California we’ve focused on leading the way for the rest of the world. If elected, one of the first concrete steps I will take is seeking assignment to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee: it’s time we take California’s climate leadership to Washington, D.C.
I'm fighting for a better life for everyone in this state – I don't care who you supported in 2016. Whether you are a liberal or a conservative, you do deserve to make a living wage, to put a roof over your child’s head, clothes on their backs and food on the table. You deserve Medicare-for-All, not just Medicare-for-Some. You deserve a better quality of life. You deserve a dignified and secure retirement. The corruption that has pervaded our nation’s Capital for so long cannot continue. It hurts the majority of Californians and Americans, because most of us can’t afford to vote with our wallets.
The real work for the people of California starts in town halls, not in the halls of power. That’s why I’ll commit to regular town halls and public forums – providing ample opportunities for hard-working Californians to discuss and debate the issues that matter most. If elected, I will spend my time at home engaging with the people of this great state so I can represent their interests more accurately in Washington, D.C.
