My wife Jamie, son Jacob, baby daughter Faith and I are blessed to live in Loma Linda.  Born at the LLU Medical Center, I grew up attending Loma Linda Academy and ultimately chose a career in law enforcement.  Currently a lieutenant with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, I also teach leadership and ethics through CSU Long Beach.

I have worked throughout the county in various communities as a patrol deputy, detective and sergeant.  In my current assignment, I am the Assistant Chief of Police for the City of Highland. 

I believe in ethical leadership by example.  My approach is to look at situations from various perspectives and draw on my experience, education, and moral compass to ensure I am doing the right thing.  I constantly evaluate my work product and effectiveness and set both short and long term goals for the future.  I believe in continuing self-improvement and ongoing learning.

Some examples of my leadership and public service both within the Sheriff’s Department and our local community are as follows:

•  Founder and Director of the Sheriff’s Gift of Love Program.  For twenty years, this charitable organization has provided Christmas to thousands of women and children housed in local domestic violence shelters.

•  Facilitator (Instructor) for the POST Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute.  SBSLI stimulates personal growth, leadership, and ethical decision-making in front-line law enforcement supervisors.

•  Member of the Sheriff’s Honor Guard for twenty years.  The Honor Guard represents the Sheriff's Department at special events, ceremonies, functions and funerals.  Members of the Honor Guard are held to the highest standards in character and professionalism.

•  Member of the Sheriff’s Speaker’s Bureau.  This professional organization promotes education and public awareness in the community with lectures and presentations by subject matter experts.  I have presented on numerous topics to community groups and civic organizations.

•  Mayor of Loma Linda.  Currently serving in my third term as an elected City Council Member, I help steer the direction of the City by enacting law, managing a large budget, setting policy and serving in a quasi-judicial role during hearings on civic projects or employee related issues.

•  Member of the Loma Linda Trails Committee. This civic organization is dedicated to promoting health awareness and conservation of open space in our local community.

•  California League of Cities - Inland Empire Chapter Past President and member of the League’s Public Safety Policy Committee.  The League of Cities is comprised of locally elected officials and public agency department heads steering legislative policy in Sacramento.
   
•  President of the Mission Creek Home Owners Association.  I serve as a board member setting policy, hearing and overseeing proceedings and managing the Association’s budget.

For the last twelve years, I have served on a well-balanced council dedicated to serving the citizens of Loma Linda.  It has been our collective goal to maintain a small hometown feel, while providing the best services possible.  I fully endorse Council Member Ron Dailey in this election as I believe he also supports the principles of our town.  None of us on the Council are career politicians, but all of us are longtime, deeply rooted residents of this community.

I believe in maintaining a well-balanced budget and healthy reserve for future needs.  Loma Linda has attained this both through the work of City Manager, T. Jarb Thaipejr and our locally appointed Budget Committee.  From their efforts, we have been able to maintain a healthy infrastructure of roads, bridges, lighting, well-maintained parks, and other City services.  This properly planned and executed maintenance translates into a vibrant residential and business community and a stabilized local economy.

One of the biggest issues facing our community, region, and country is our ever growing homeless population.  Although there are many factors causing it, very few leaders have any real solutions.  We have to keep a balance between protecting our families and businesses and helping those who are truly in need.  In that endeavor, I am a strong advocate for solutions that keep our community safe and provide help to those who truly need it.  As a board member for the California League of Cities, I am working with groups at the state and county level to develop a comprehensive plan which will help track services throughout the county and provide all of our cities a way to communicate and collaborate on the issue.

 Serving the community as both a law enforcement leader and locally elected official, I have seen how uncontrolled growth, careless spending and mismanagement has threatened the peace and safety of other communities.  I am committed to ensuring those things do not happen in Loma Linda.  I am proud of my record and the goals we have accomplished.

To preserve the character of our town and the quality of life we value, I will continue to:

•  Preserve the beautiful open spaces in our hills and valleys.

•  Support our medical institutions and local businesses.

•  Keep our city fiscally sound.
