Karina Talamantes, a public servant, small business owner, and first-generation Latina is a living manifestation of the California dream. As the daughter of working-class parents who immigrated to California from Mexico, Karina witnessed firsthand the hard work and sacrifice needed to reach her goals. These crucial lessons helped to shape her values and career path.

A tireless public servant, Karina understands that even the most minor efforts can yield significant results. After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Community and Regional Development from UC Davis, Karina worked with the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence at the US Department of Education under President Obama. Her work directly contributed to policy decisions that would close opportunity gaps among public school students nationwide, helping to create a more level playing field for all students in America. Upon returning to Sacramento, Karina worked for college access programs like Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search, and the Early Academic Outreach Program where she helped low-income and first-generation students continue their post-secondary education.

A natural leader, Karina won her first term as an elected Trustee for the Sacramento County Board of Education in 2018 and has been a leading proponent of increased education funding across the state. Professionally, she serves as Chief of Staff to Sacramento Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby.

As a proud resident of the Natomas community, Karina stays involved in neighborhood associations, community forums, and remains engaged with residents. She is a member of the UC Davis Chicano-Latino Alumni Association and the UC Davis Government and public policy Alumni Group. She also serves on the Sacramento State Honors Advisory Board and the Sacramento Library Authority Board.

I was born and raised in the city of Sacramento. My upbringing consisted of years spent in the Sacramento Foster Youth until I was eventually adopted. At the age of 2,  I almost lost my life to gun violence here in Sacramento. The trauma of this event is one reason why I am passionate about running for City Council in District 3. Safety for all, especially our youth must be a priority. There must be crime prevention strategies implemented to reduce the amount of violence experienced in our city.  I advocate for gun violence prevention.

I have worked for not-for-profit organizations in the Sacramento area including Sutter Health and Dignity Health. I graduated from Sacramento State with a bachelor’s degree in Public Health where I studied what protects and promotes the health of people and the communities in which they live. I volunteered at Wind Youth Services to help homeless youth in my early adulthood. I am actively involved in the community by participating in neighborhood clean-ups, attending community events with my children, and participating in the Twin Rivers School District.  

My husband Skyler and I raise our three children in the Gardenland neighborhood.  I am a dedicated mother of three. When COVID-19 started to affect my oldest child's education, I knew it was time to act. I supported my family during such a chaotic time, which provided the stability and normalcy we needed. The impact COVID-19 continues to have on my family, just like so many others in our district is another reason why I am passionate about running for City Council. I understand that it is important to protect families and provide resources especially during chaotic times. The city of Sacramento deserves to have an individual who understands the needs of the community and will advocate for those needs.  

My story starts with struggle but is imbued with equal parts sacrifice and love.

I was raised by a single dad who always put the needs of his family and his community first. He worked 12 hours a day, nearly every single day of the week, teaching me the value of hard work. Despite working his fingers to the bone, he never failed to be there for me as a dad, coaching my sports teams, attending every parent-teacher conference - even dressing up as Santa Claus at my school, regardless of my objections!  Being a single parent didn’t stop him from serving as a mentor to dozens of young people in my community, ensuring they too had the fatherly support they needed to thrive. From my father I learned the value of hard work, service and sacrifice and he taught me lessons I carry with me every day.

Despite not having a mom present for most of my childhood, a group of “neighborhood moms” showered me with the kind of motherly love every child needs and deserves. When I was 17, my dad married a woman who I proudly call my mom. Between her and my father, I learned what true, unconditional love, faith, and kindness are.  

When I was 17, I lost a friend to gun violence, which propelled me to a life of service. 

I graduated from Valley High School in South Sacramento in 2006. In my school, I was surrounded by ambitious, hard-working, and intelligent young people. Unfortunately, my community was saturated with violence, drugs, unemployment, and hopelessness. This difficult environment did not create the conditions for success, and as a result, most of my classmates ended up in the school-to-prison and poverty pipelines. Despite the challenges that were inherent in my community, I was able to thrive because I had a support system of caring adults – an irreplaceable asset that too many kids in my neighborhood didn’t have. I also played football for most of my life, which put me on the path to an athletic scholarship that helped pay for my education. 

Tired of the continued injustice, I decided to return to my community after college and help improve outcomes for young people. 

In 2011, energized and inspired by President Obama’s campaign, I went to work in the California State Capitol as a policy consultant and legislative advisor, working to craft and pass progressive policies that improved the lives of people living in California’s most vulnerable communities. 

In 2013, I returned to Valley High School to create a youth focused non-profit dedicated to closing the college opportunity gap: Improve Your Tomorrow (IYT). At IYT, we work to break the school-to-prison pipeline by helping young men of color go to college and succeed. IYT serves close to 3,000 young men of color across Northern and Central California. The success is measurable and tremendous: 99% percent of IYT scholars graduate high school on time, and 82% attend college.

I love our community and my roots in this city are deep. My wife Andrea and I are proud to raise our two children here and have them attend public school in South Natomas. 

Now I’m running for Sacramento City Council to make an even bigger difference for our families and communities.

I am running for Sacramento City Council because it’s clear that the kind of change needed to improve the lives of our most vulnerable young people and families can only happen at a local policy level. Like my father taught me, I have dedicated my life to serving others and have built my career on addressing some of our community’s most pressing and systemic challenges. My background in public policy, coupled with my experience as an education nonprofit leader have led me to this decision to continue serving our community on the City Council, where you can count on me to never stop fighting for our families and communities to have the safe and thriving future they deserve.
