As a twenty-year resident of San Carlos, I feel there is no better community in which to live. My wife Julia and I have raised three children here and feel fortunate to be part of such a warm and close-knit community. I have served on the San Carlos Planning Commission since 2018. This role has not only given me insight into the changes, challenges and opportunities facing our city and our region, it has inspired me to run for City Council. My concerns and priorities include economic development, housing, traffic and infrastructure, public safety and childcare, particularly in the wake of the pandemic. I was raised in the Midwest in a blue collar family and served as a Captain in the Army after graduating from West Point. I then earned a law degree at Stanford and now work as the COO of a health technology company. I have coached youth sports and my wife and I own a local small business that gives me firsthand knowledge of the many challenges facing this sector. My approach to solving problems is pragmatic and collaborative, which reflects the values of this unique and special community.

I'm a Bay Area native, grew up in Sunnyvale, studied at UC Davis and Stanford Law. I worked as a corporate attorney during the Dot Com boom and bust, worked at several start-ups and am now a business executive at Apple where I’ve been for over 17 years.  

At Apple, I negotiate strategic partnerships and am responsible for all of Apple’s manufacturing relationships.  I’m known for being a strategic, out-of-the-box thinker and collaborative negotiator and creative problem solver. 

I now want to apply my energy, skills, and insights to helping the City respond to the current challenges, negotiate better deals with developers and protect our neighborhoods and homes from increasing threats at the state level.

In an election year in which the current Mayor is on the ballot along with a Planning Commissioner who has received the endorsement of all the other council members, I ask for your support in bringing a different voice to City Hall.  

Budget cuts and declining revenues will be with us for a while.  The Pandemic has forced us to determine what is essential, to work virtually, and to change the rules.  San Carlos should continue with this mindset after the Pandemic has passed to find ways to do more with less, not just to cut costs, but to provide even higher value city services.

Good development brings jobs and revenue to the City and adds richness to the lives of its residents.  Bad development takes away from our distinctiveness, does more for people who don't live in our City than it does for its residents, and creates more problems than it solves.  I would like to see San Carlos require new development to be balanced by investment in public infrastructure, such as schools, dedicated bike and pedestrian paths, a permanent home for the Farmers Market, public parking, and traffic control.  To enable this, the City needs better engagement from all parts of the City to determine what is needed most and a clearer vision for the kind of projects we want to pursue base on that input.  The City then needs to negotiate more creative deals with large developers who have the means to contribute to these projects.  

The statewide initiatives to increase housing density are for a good purpose, but we shouldn’t threaten our single family home neighborhoods by letting the state override local zoning control of these neighborhoods to bring in multi-unit complexes.  I want to see the City address the need for more affordable housing by implementing a better vision for the East side of San Carlos and by experimenting with new zoning options for larger lots City wide.  Mixed-use zoning with new zoning options such as live-work and co-living spaces that allow people to both live and work in their neighborhood could provide affordable housing options for singles and young families.
