My Top 3 Priorities

  • Climate change is the greatest threat facing us today. This is about whether we save the planet for our children and grandchildren. We are going to pass a Green New Deal to save the planet from climate catastrophe and create 20 million jobs.
  • 87 million Americans are uninsured or underinsured. Bernie is running for president because it is long overdue for the U.S. to join every other major country on Earth and guarantee health care to all as a right, through a Medicare for All program.
  • This campaign is about bringing fundamental political change to America. We’ll end disparities in housing, education, retirement security and everywhere else. We’ll transform our immigration and criminal justice systems which are racist and broken.

Biography

Bernie was elected to the U.S. Senate after 16 years as Vermont’s congressman in the House of Reps. He is now serving his third term in the Senate.

In 1981, Bernie was elected Mayor of Burlington and helped transform Burlington into one of the most exciting and livable small cities in America. During this time, the city made huge strides in affordable housing, progressive taxation, environmental protection, child care, women’s and LGBTQ+ rights, youth programs and the arts.

In Congress, Bernie has fought tirelessly for working families, focusing on the shrinking middle class and growing gap between the rich and everyone else. He has fought his entire life to root out all forms of discrimination in our society.

For decades, he’s been fighting to guarantee health care as a human right to everyone in this country, regardless of income, race, gender or sexual identity. Bernie has consistently fought to expand women’s access to reproductive care and has opposed efforts attacking a woman’s right to choose. Bernie successfully worked with Congressman Jim Clyburn to dramatically expand access to community health centers which provide primary care, dental care, low-cost prescription drugs and mental health counseling to more than 28 million Americans. As a result of Senator Sanders’ successful fight, he secured $11 billion for Community Health Centers in the Affordable Care Act that have delivered care to tens of millions of low-income people in this country, largely people of color. He also secured funding for the National Health Service Corps in the Affordable Care Act to bring more health care providers to underserved communities.

From 1995-2005, a period when Congress was controlled by the extreme right wing, Bernie passed more amendments on the floor of the House than any other Member of Congress. For these efforts, Bernie was dubbed the "amendment king". As chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, Bernie worked across the aisle to “bridge Washington’s toxic partisan divide and cut one of the most significant deals in years.” He again worked across the aisle to pass a War Powers Resolution in the House and Senate for the first time since its passage 45 years ago.

Bernie’s amendments prevented companies from slashing the pensions of older workers; provided the funding necessary to make tens of thousands of homes more energy efficient; kept senior citizens on fixed incomes warm in the winter through the LIHEAP program; sought to lower prices for prescription drugs; eliminated corporate welfare; and protected our nation’s veterans.

Bernie ran for president in 2016, and together with millions of people in this country, started the political revolution.

Questions & Answers

Questions from League of Women Voters of California (3)

What financing method(s) would you support to repair or improve roads, rails, ports, airports, the electrical grid, and other infrastructure in the U.S.?
Answer from Bernie Sanders:

It is unacceptable that our infrastructure is collapsing in the richest country on earth. For many years we have underfunded the maintenance of our nation's physical infrastructure. All over America, communities are struggling with deteriorating water systems, waste-water plants, schools, airports, rail systems, roads, bridges, levees and dams. That has to change. It is time to rebuild America.

We need millions of workers to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure—roads, bridges, drinking water systems, wastewater plants, rail, schools, affordable housing—and build our 100% sustainable energy system. This infrastructure is critical to a thriving, green economy. And we can create 13 million decent-paying jobs rebuilding that infrastructure.

As President, Bernie will pass the Green New Deal to not only save our planet, but to build the critical infrastructure needed all over our nation, especially in the communities most impacted by climate disasters. We’ll invest trillions of dollars to repair, rebuild and modernize our infrastructure: our roads,  bridges, railways, subways, water systems, wastewater plants, airports, and housing - and when we do that we create millions of good-paying, union jobs. We will close the school infrastructure gap so we can rebuild our nation’s schools, where some children go without heat in the winter. We will ensure every household and workplace is connected to high-speed broadband internet. We will invest in infrastructure to protect the frontline communities most vulnerable to extreme climate impacts like wildfires, sea level rise, drought, floods, and extreme weather like hurricanes. We will modernize and transform our entire energy system to combat climate change. This will create jobs in every community and restore our nation’s infrastructure to a standard we can be proud of.

Funding that flows from the federal government will have the best labor and Buy American standards attached. Bernie will not just oppose the privatization of public services, he’ll do everything he can to reverse the privatization of public services. Privatizing public services, whether it’s roads, parking meters, or water systems, gives taxpayer money to big corporations to charge fees and tolls on the backs of American workers.

What programs or legislation, if any, would you support to help Americans of all ages to secure affordable health care?
Answer from Bernie Sanders:
Bernie is running for president because the time is long overdue for the United States to join every other major country on Earth and guarantee health care to all people as a right, not a privilege, through a Medicare for All program. Health care is not a commodity. It is a human right. The goal of a health care system should be to keep people well, not to make stockholders rich. Bernie’s Medicare for All program would provide comprehensive health coverage to all with no premiums, deductibles, copayments, or surprise bills.
