Justice Margulies was appointed as an Associate Justice to the First Appellate District, Division One, of the California Court of Appeal in January 2002.
Before joining the Court of Appeal, Justice Margulies was a Superior Court Judge in Alameda County from 1988 until 2002. As a Superior Court Judge, Justice Margulies handled criminal, civil, and probate cases. Prior to being elevated to Superior Court, Justice Margulies was a Judge on the San Leandro-Hayward Municipal Court from 1985 until 1988.
Justice Margulies began her career in public service as a Deputy District Attorney with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. She served as a Deputy District Attorney from 1977 until her appointment to the Municipal Court in 1985.
Justice Margulies is currently Chairperson of the State Bar Judicial Applicant Evaluation and Nomination Committee which makes recommendations to the appointing authorities for State Bar Judges. She previously chaired the Judicial Council Criminal Jury Instruction Advisory Committee from 2006-2011.
Justice Margulies was born and raised in Alameda County, and still resides in Alameda County. She holds a J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law, and a B.A. in history from UCLA.
Justice Margulies is married to Bart J. Schenone, and has one son, Benjamin Margulies Schenone.
