Biography
I retired this June as an elementary classroom teacher having taught for more than 30 years. I taught for San Luis Coastal Unified School District for 25 years both on the coast and in the city. As a classroom teacher, I have worked in diverse settings. I started teaching in Los Angeles Unified School District where I taught inner-city school students. I then moved to the Santa-Maria Bonita School District teaching special needs students. Following my bilingual special day classroom assignment, I continued my teaching career in San Luis Coastal Unified District teaching at both Sinsheimer and Monarch Grove elementary schools, teaching a variety of grade levels.
Beyond my regular classroom teaching, I spent 6 years as a Reading Intervention and English Learning Specialist, piloted and helped develop new District Curriculum, and planned and led the English Learner's Advisory Committee at my site. I also taught Latino Literacy classes for parents and families at night, served as a Teacher PTA Liaison, was a member of my School Site Council, and served on budget, principal, and teacher interview committees.
My experiences both as a parent and classroom teacher are what motivate me to seek this office. I bring a strong student-centered focus of rigor, "all means all", and learn by doing to our San Luis Coastal School Board.
Our District has enjoyed significantly higher revenues than surrounding districts. This has fostered our distinction as a high-performing district. Given the impending closure of Diablo Canyon and subsequent reduction in school funding, it is vital that voters have a candidate that has innovative and real-time solutions to budget issues that effect all students. My recent classroom experience gives me the insight to help our District establish priorities and decisions about the current educational and classroom realities of both students and teachers. This focus will ensure my strong advocacy for fiscal accountability and transparency. It is this knowledge gained as both a classroom teacher and former SLCUSD parent that drives my dedication to ensure that all student needs are foremost in every board decision.
