Biography

I’m Bruce Herring, candidate for the NID Board of Directors in Division 2. I’m 65 and have lived in Nevada County with my family since 1988.  I retired in 2014 from Bitney Prep High School where I served as Teacher, Dean of Academics, and over four years as Director. Over the years I taught US History, World History, Government, Economics, Chess, and Music.  Previously I was half owner of Wolf Creek Wilderness, the local kayak shop. I also served briefly on the SYRCL Board in the late nineties.

Prior to that I squeezed in four years as the Materials and Purchasing Manager for a manufacturing firm in Phoenix. I’ve also worked on a shipping/receiving dock, as a framing carpenter, and a whitewater rafting guide in California, Oregon, Alaska, and Grand Canyon. I grew up down in Orange County and earned a B.A. and Teaching Credential from Chico State University.

Sally (who is a resident artist at ASIF studios) and I have been married 36 years, and love to hang out with our two adult daughters and a 16 year old mangy cat.

“For over a dozen years I made my living on rivers.  In doing so one learns a great deal about the operations and misconceptions of dams and reservoirs.  I have closely followed water issues in the Western U.S. ever since.  I’m a worker.  You can count on me to do my homework, listen to your concerns, then roll up my sleeves and make it happen.”
