Anna Klovstad uniquely pairs her outstanding People Skills with a practical and scientific background.  Anna has put her degree in Architecture to work in the fields of Construction, Management, and Environmental Sustainability.  She is a Sustainability Specialist, a Certified Energy Manager and a Certified Construction Manager with 30 years’ experience.  Anna’s achievements have been won due to her ability to communicate well in situations that are challenging not only technically, but socially.  Anna’s colleagues name these as a few of the skills for which she is known in the community:

Anna Klovstad has worked for the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District (TTUSD) for the last 16 years as a Construction Manager. Anna’s unique role is that of Gatekeeper, making projects successful by guiding the decisions for major contracts that affect Truckee and its schools (projects totaling more than $150,000,000 to date).

Anna’s skills include leadership and technical supervision of improvement projects, all the way from the Concept Phase, through Design, then Permitting, actual Construction, and final Occupancy.  Anna, therefore, has proven skills not only in the practical arena of planning and building projects but also in the challenging interplay between people on both sides of the numerous issues surrounding development.

Anna has been Manager for procuring and managing TTUSD contracts with all construction professionals: architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, technology, end users, and internal staff. She has balanced huge budgets and complex schedules, all the while ensuring the overall success of each project.

Anna’s skills with governmental regulation mean that she has successfully ensured environmental compliance of such TTUSD projects.  Anna’s talents have ushered numerous major construction projects through the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), finding major savings for TTUSD, while managing to please not only the Division of the State Architect but also local and state agencies.  Anna’s grant-writing, programming, and rebates have brought over $3,000,000 in funding and various other awards.

And yet, it is Anna Klovstad’s patient and gregarious nature which has helped her win over converts in these male-dominated fields.  Anna’s ability to match toughness and a dedication to exacting standards with thoughtful negotiation skills have led to her quick rise in the industry, and most recently to the national award for TTUSD:  the Green Achiever Award 2018 (see below)!

In a decade, Anna Klovstad created a Sustainability Program that has saved money and significantly reduced environmental impacts in Truckee.  

In 2008, during the financial crisis, Anna suggested to TTUSD management that the District could save money by reducing TTUSD’s energy usage. In the first year, her leadership saved the District $200,000 – about 15% of its annual expenditures.  The program quickly expanded from gas and electricity conservation to other areas, such as water conservation, waste management, green cleaning, green purchasing, no idling policies and many more.

The true success of the TTUSD sustainability program came from the partnership with Sierra Watershed Education Partnership (SWEP). SWEP created Truckee’s famous Green Teams (elementary school), Eco Action (middle school), and the Envirolution Club (high school). The young messengers have been our communities’ environmental educators. They helped the Town of Truckee successfully implement the plastic bag ban, and are on track to lead this small town to the forefront of the Business/Environmental coalition in the U.S.

In fact, with Anna’s leadership, TTUSD’s sustainability program ranked 4th in the State of California as a Gold level Green Ribbon School District for 2017.  In 2018, TTUSD took first place in the State and won the Federal competition. In September 2018, Anna travels to Washington DC with Dr. Robert J. Leri, TTUSD Superintendent and Chief Learning Office, Sue Mock, TTUSD Science Coach, and Missy Mohler, Executive Director of SWEP, to receive the Federal recognition of a Green Achiever Award!

Truckee needs Anna Klovstad right NOW, to bring her professional skills and leadership talents to bear on challenges such as balancing budgets while saving energy and using Sustainability to save our town’s future.

I have spent the last 15+ years gaining experience that has prepared me to take on this position. First, my experience over the last few years on the Planning Commission. This experience has proved invaluable. While on the Commission, we deal mostly with very specific interpretations of the policy direction that is handed down from Town Council. It is this first hand experience that is important to carry to the Council. I am already up to speed and am ready to hit the ground running.

Second is my role as COO of Tahoe Mountain Sports. I know how to manage complex processes, have first hand accounts of our employee housing issues, understand what it takes to run a small business in our town and know the regulations that can affect our local businesses.

Truckee is an amazing place and from the moment I arrived, I knew this Town would be home for my family and me. I’ve lived here since 2001 and as a local business owner, appointed representative to the Town Planning Commission, and passionate community volunteer, I understand the challenges and opportunities our Town faces.

I’m running for Truckee Town Council to bring creative, pragmatic, and collaborative solutions we need to make our Town even greater. With the General Plan Update in progress, it’s a great time to get involved.

As a Planning Commissioner for the last 2 years, I’ve advocated for stronger housing policies, supported sensible development and built community partnerships. My passion for the outdoors reflects Truckee’s core values and vision. Planning for climate change and wildfire disaster is another of my top priorities and I bring the experience needed to accomplish this goal.

Let’s work together to develop smart land use policies, address our housing issues and maintain our unique community character. We can do this together. Please join me, my wife and 9 year old daughter and support my candidacy.

As a graduate from San Francisco State University in liberal studies along with an AA degree in fire science and a K-9 teaching credential I feel comfortable as a qualified candidate to be one of your town council members.  I care for our land, social economy and children so we can expect and enjoy a safe, comfortable life in our spectacular town.

I am a permanent resident and home owner in our beautiful city of Truckee.  I enjoy many of the outdoor activities the area has to offer and hope to continue to enjoy them.  As most, growth can be a difficult and sometime problematic obstacle we all have to contend too.   Yet growth is inevitable due to our beautiful and strategic location.  I understand the importance of doing things right in relation to the environment as it relates to air, water and land pollutions.  It also effects congestion, health and safety and quality of life. But planning with proper contingency applications we can grow while continuing our standard of living which either brought us here and or keeps us here.

Get to Know Carmen Carr

Carmen moved to Truckee in 1986 after earning her structural engineer draftsman degree in Stuttgart, Germany. In addition she holds a graphic arts degree from Truckee Meadows Community College, Reno, NV in 1989.

The mountain life – hiking, biking, and skiing – drew her in. She stayed for the people.

Carmen brings her positive attitude and commitment to success into everything she does. When Carmen gets involved, she does it with dedication, professionalism and fun. 

Many people have gotten to know Carmen through her business. Carmen sells real estate and she’s had her finger on the pulse of Truckee since 2002. She knows the community, the different neighborhoods and she has experienced the trends. 

In 2007 she learned about BNI – Business Networking International. Carmen immediately connected with the BNI philosophy of “Givers Gain”.

Carmen became a founding member of the Truckee chapter Mountain HIGH BNI to foster confident, local entrepreneurs – businesses that serve our community. By holding one of the top three chapter offices for almost ten years, she has mentored her colleagues to achieve their dreams of ownership, and watched the economy of Truckee grow strong. In 2011 she also took on the role of assistant director for BNI Central Valley.​

Carmen has been an avid Toastmaster since 2007. She started a second local club, “Truckee Talkers” in 2011, and has earned the highest award in Toastmasters three times.

“I believe in the organization and the difference it has made in my personal and professional life. Through Toastmasters I have learned public speaking, but more than that – I have come to know my convictions and how to express them in a way that brings understanding. There’s always more to learn.”  

Carmen spends a lot of time out in the community. She sees things that are easy for others to overlook. More than 10 years ago she saw families in need. So, she looked for a solution and found the Family Resource Center of Truckee (FRC). The Center serves families who have no other safety net. And, in 2014 she became Board Chair to help guide the expansion of the organization. Under Carmen’s leadership, the Family Resource Center of Truckee has increased capacity by growing its staff, strengthening its board, developing new programs and building a dedicated donor base.

What about Housing?  Carmen joined the Mountain Housing Council of Truckee, representing the Family Resource Center and sitting among 29 committed stakeholders focusing on local housing solutions. 

Carmen believes in achievable housing. It’s one reason she became a candidate for the Town of Truckee Council.

“When I recognize a need and a solution that can benefit the community, I don't shy away from seeing it through.”

Carmen has spent time traveling internationally, visiting more than 15 countries. She brings a deep appreciation for culture and the planet to her campaign platform.

Vote Carmen Carr – Carmen Cares

While I am originally from the east coast, I felt an immediate affinity for Truckee my first winter in 1994/95. Since then I have gone to graduate school, gotten a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, been married 15 years, traveled, worked and raised a family. In the last twenty-some years, I haven’t found anywhere that even comes close to embodying the work/life balance better than Truckee. I am grateful everyday that my family and I get to live in the Sierras.

Within the last year and a half I have gotten involved in local politics. I regularly attend town meetings, predominantly the twice-monthly Town Council meetings. With my Civil Engineering and mathematics background I have found these council meetings to be incredibly compelling. Our town is currently in a growth phase, and there are numerous viewpoints as well as technical facets to consider for every project. I have found myself digging into traffic reports, pouring over site plans and talking to anyone who will spare me the time.

In addition I have attended multiple Planning Commission and PUD meetings, and even a Hospital District meeting once to lobby our district board to support a statewide universal healthcare plan. After seeing some disconnect between decisions happening at some of these meetings and how friends and acquaintances felt about a few of the issues, I also canvassed local neighborhoods and businesses about upcoming town and district hearings. In this process I have authored two petitions and collected over 600 signatures.

I am deeply invested in this community. My kids attend the local public schools, where I am a weekly volunteer and substitute teacher. The kids have gotten so good at skiing, I can no longer keep up with them at the ski hill. I have played hockey with the women’s league for years and finally worked up the nerve to join the co-ed hockey league last winter. In years past, I was involved in the rock climbing and bouldering communities as well. I am currently active in the mountain bike community and have met friends, local legends, and fellow enthusiasts out on the trails.

I am a Mom, a math nerd, and an outdoor enthusiast. My husband and I were married in the area, my first child was born locally and I have weathered terrible loss here with the help of an amazing and supportive community. I have enjoyed unprecedented opportunity here and want to help ensure that generations to come have the same prospects.
