My Top 3 Priorities

  • Secure the San Joaquin Country Jail (337 escapes in the last 12 years) and implement training programs to reduce recidivism.
  • Restore regular patrol staffing levels. There are 124 funded positions, but currently only 67 officers are assigned to regular patrol.
  • Begin the transition from Coroner's duties to a Medical Examiner's Office, due to Sheriff's Office being stripped of Coroner's duties.

Summary

Current patrol staffing levels are below 1978 staffing levels.

Currently, the cities in our county to fend for themselves while officers have been pulled from regular patrol to staff specialized units and give support to executive Sheriff's Office staff. There are currently 124 regular patrol positions funded by the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors, but only 67 deputies are currently assigned to regular patrol. This has caused a terrible shortage of patrols in our community. This has exasperated our rising crime statistics and brought about Stockton's unfortunate distinction as the 6th highest city in the nation for violent crime per capita.

As your Sheriff, I pledge to reallocate our staffing to fulfill our mandate of protecting each and every citizen in our county. I will work closely with every law enforcement agency in our county to make sure we create a community where families feel safe, businesses want to come, and criminals fear to tread.
