My Top 3 Priorities

  • Fight for working class families because I personally understand that struggle. I worked hard to get ahead and I am committed to making sure that same opportunity is afforded to others.
  • Advocate for policies aimed at improving college affordability including lowering interest rates for government backed loans, allowing students to refinance their loans, expanding the Pell Grant program and pushing universities to keep costs down.
  • Protect and preserve the unique communities, scenic views, and open spaces along the Central Coast for future generations to enjoy.

Biography

Salud Carbajal has a proven track record building a stronger Central Coast. He’s running for Congress to continue fighting for opportunity and security for middle-class families and protect the unique communities of our region.

Salud and his family lived in a small copper mining town in Arizona. His father worked in the mines while his mother maintained their home for their eight children. When the mine closed, the family moved to Oxnard where Salud’s father found work in the fields. Attending junior high and high school in Oxnard, Salud applied himself and focused on his education.

Salud earned his Bachelors degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and his Masters degree in Organizational Management from the Fielding University. He served eight years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, including active duty service during the 1991 Gulf War.

In 2004, Salud was elected to the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors. In his tenure, he has demonstrated a commitment to protecting our environment, promoting sustainability, strengthening our schools, and enhancing the health and safety of our community.

A leader in protecting our scenic views and open spaces, he’s stood up against developments on the Gaviota Coast that threatened preservation efforts and has opposed new offshore oil development along our coastline. Salud has worked to implement a Climate Action Plan for Santa Barbara county and made solar energy an affordable efficient option for homeowners. He has promoted innovative solutions to addressing environmental stewardship and sustainability and advocating for job creation in this emerging industry.

Drawing upon his own childhood experiences growing up in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood, Salud shares a passion for improving the lives of at-risk youth. He found innovative ways to strengthen our schools by creating a job skills and mentorship program for at-risk youth and providing summer programming for our kids.

He has been an advocate for health programs that help our children and seniors receive the care they need, co-sponsoring an initiative that provided health insurance for all of Santa Barbara county’s children.

Salud is married to his wife, Gina and has two children, Natasha and Michael.

Salud has served on a number of national and regional committees focusing on climate change, children and families, and senior issues. He has been awarded for his leadership by a number of organizations.

Questions & Answers

Questions from The League of Women Voters of California Education Fund and California Counts, a public media collaboration. (4)

Should immigration laws be changed?  What changes would you support?  Please explain why.
Answer from Salud Carbajal:

Millions of immigrants currently live in the United States without documentation and without legal protections in constant fear of deportation. These are families that came to America in order to give themselves and their children a chance at the many remarkable opportunities this country has to offer.

When I immigrated with my family, it was through a system that worked. Now that system is broken. The real answer to fixing our broken immigration system is through comprehensive immigration reform that only Congress can enact. When I am in Congress, I will make it a priority to work across the aisle to pass bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform to protect and to keep these families together. Families that, like all of us, want live with dignity, without fear and to contribute to our great nation.

The political climate in Washington, D.C. has been extremely partisan in recent years. In that kind of atmosphere, what would you do to get things done while in office?
Answer from Salud Carbajal:

One of the things I pride myself on most is my strong record of working across party lines, bringing Democrats and Republicans together to solve problems and get results for our constituents. As a Santa Barbara County Supervisor, I’ve worked across the aisle to preserve our natural environment and open spaces, expand health insurance for our kids and invest in our highways and roads to create jobs and maintain our quality of life.

The partisanship in Congress is unfortunate and is damaging our nation. There are still opportunities, however, to build relationships with colleagues across the aisle in order to create to bring positive investments and opportunities for our citizens along the Central Coast. I believe that’s the kind of leadership we need in Congress today.

What, if anything, does the U.S. need to do in order to address national security and terrorism? Please explain your answer in detail.
Answer from Salud Carbajal:

International terrorism and lone wolf attacks inspired by this radical ideology here in the United States are of extreme concern. It is not an excuse, however, for the hateful rhetoric of Republican candidates this election cycle. We must do everything in our power to strengthen our immigration screenings, but they should not be stopped altogether nor should they discriminate based on race or religion.

The Federal Government plays a part in California water allocation and use through a variety of laws.  What, if any, legislation would you support in an effort to handle water shortages caused by the current and any future drought?
Answer from Salud Carbajal:

The Central Coast is home to some of the most diverse and beautiful places in the world. It is imperative that we work to conserve our water during this historic drought. We need to encourage a multi-modal solution to one of the most pressing environmental crises of out times. We need to encourage programs that expand our water recycling, storage and desalinization all in coordination. California is home to a vibrant agricultural community and we need to focus on a solution that is viable for our Central Coast agricultural businesses as well.

I would also encourage us to move toward cleaner energy solutions that help create new jobs, like we did with the solar power facilities in the Cuyama Valley and on the Carrizo Plain. I am proud to have served on President Obama’s task force on climate change to come up with a range of sustainable solutions to be implemented at the state and local levels and to have the Sierra Club’s endorsement. I will fight to protect our Central Coast’s environment and renew our investments in clean energy sources, so that future generations have the opportunity to enjoy these open spaces in our region.
