What kind of a leader is Judith Christensen?

I served on the Daly City Council from 2004 to 2008 and when there were not going to be any women or seniors on the Council, I ran to return to the Council. A few words from when I was recently sworn-in as City Councilmember will give you an idea of the kind of person I am.

“I am not beholding to any big name politicians or corporations or lobby groups for this victory so I come to you completely free of obligation and totally independent and I am proud to be your voice on the Council. I was endorsed by you the voters over the candidate chosen by the Council and police and fire and most politicians in the region.

So love me or hate me, agree with me or disagree with me, here I am again. You know me, I always tell it like it is and tonight will be no different. I will say some things that will make you uncomfortable and not please all of you, but the truth is the truth. And I welcome the opportunity to speak for more than 2 minutes.   . . .

Our campaign focused on sharing a few key issues directly with voters: 

There are some overwhelming challenges to keeping this city afloat in the coming years. It is only by facing the truth about our serious financial troubles, that we will be able to make the painful but responsible decisions that best serve the needs of the entire community. These are not the kind of decisions politicians want to make, especially those with an eye on higher office. I will be seriously focused on finding solutions.

I propose that we have term limits for Councilmembers. The president of the United States only gets 8 years and if it takes longer than 12 years for us on the Council to make the positive changes that we planned then it is time for us to move on and let someone else have a go at it. Besides when people are in office too long, they tend to feel entitled. This may lead to a loss of connection with the people, disrespect for public input and decisions that are not in the best interest of the community.

In closing, we on the Council are all going to have to find a way to put our petty power struggles aside and put the people’s business first. This won’t be easy and it requires the very best from each of us.

I promise you that I will put the good of the community first. I will continue to ask the tough questions that you want answered. I will give this job my full attention and engagement and I will be fearless in my efforts to make positive change and find a solution to our financial troubles.

I have a BA degree from UC Berkeley (Political Science, English Literature) and a recent MA degree from San Francisco State University in Museum Studies. I have spent my career working for non-profit organizations including Planned Parenthood, Friends of the Urban Forest, Coleman Advocates for Children and The Institute on Aging.

I have voted in every election since I was 21 and eligible. I grew up in a working class union family and I am particularly concerned with the housing and educational opportunities for lower income people.

I am a liberal Democrat, an environmentalist, an advocate for animals and a feminist. I spent over a decade fighting against the abuses of Redevelopment and the use of eminent domain powers to take homes and private businesses to give to private developers. With the end of redevelopment in California, we no longer have to worry about these abuses.

I am a Democrat who walks precincts. We need to expand efforts to increase voter information and participation. We also need to inform voters about the financial backers of campaign information (and misinformation). We need to know who is backing candidates and who is responsible for deplorable smear campaigns. I am supporting current initiative efforts for campaign finance, donor disclosure legislation in California.

I am running for re-election to San Mateo County Democratic Central Committee representing District 5,  because I believe we should always remember that we are here to DO THE PEOPLE'S BUSINESS...

I will always work to bring people together with different ideas to promote creative thinking, discussion, compromise, and a long-range vision. This is how we come to the best and most equitable decisions.

I believe that openly discussing controversial issues may make some people uncomfortable, but I see it as a sign of a healthy democracy.

From Daly City to San Bruno and Broadmoor to Brisbane and Colma to South San Francisco, I truly believe we are all "neighbors" in North San Mateo County and we need to stand up for each other. I believe in a future that preserves our cultural and economic diversity, our neighborhood quality of life, our civil liberties, and promotes respect and social justice for all members of our community.

K. Annette Hipona

Originally born in Brooklyn, New York, growing up in a poor neighborhood in Bedford Stuyvesant, I saw firsthand the crime, violence and not having much but the basic essentials of food, clothing and roof over my head

I came to California in 1970 at the age of 16 and immediately found a part time job as a dishwasher while attending school.

I aspired to become a Doctor while attending SF State University until plans changed upon getting married in 1975.  I needed a job in order to support my family.   Given my past and upbringing, I had to do something to give back, protect victims and the oppressed and thereby sought the honorable profession of becoming a Police Officer.

During my 35 year career, I have dedicated my life to the pursuit of fairness, respect for others of all ethnicities, and to enforcing the law.   This is what makes America great!

I have raised a family of four (4) children to which all of them have followed my foot steps in becoming gainfully employed in Law Enforcement and Governmental contracting firm.  Their significant others are also within Law Enforcement and Health Services fields as well.

The common denominator here is care and respect for all human beings.

After retirement in 2011, Later I was asked to consider a volunteer position as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Daly City, and to also serve as the Representative Proxy of State Senator Mark Leno (district 11) for the San Mateo County Democratic Central Committee.  Both I gladly accepted.

It has been a great life thus far and I have no complaints, other than, there is still so much to do in continuing to support the Democratic Values of our great Nation.  I am sensitive to the needs of our seniors while at the same time I champion the needs of our future young democrats.
