I have demonstrated commitment to my community. I've been President of the SGJAA, which is the largest youth organization in our city, for 25 years. I've coached over 75 teams during this period. I've helped fund raise for various activities throughout the years. Here's a short list: Relay For Life, Santa Cop Program, Churches In Action backpack giveaway, Thanksgiving turkey giveaway, as well as raising funds for sports programs from our three high schools. The above listed are all volunteer activities. Although these activities have required many hours of service, I'm supported by my wife, of 36 years, as well as my, now, adult children. My wife and I raised our two children here in South Gate. We are now helping raise our grandchildren. Throughout my time in South Gate, I've received numerous awards. The one I'm most proud of is the Lifetime Achievement Award given to me by the Youth Commission recently.

My Political Philosophy falls right in line to my personal philosophy, which is to serve our fellow man. We should to make every effort to be a contributor to the greater good of the community. We need to work on preparing our very young for the challenges that they will face later in life. For our youth and young adults, we should make opportunities available to engage in activities where they can put into practice those things that they've learned. These opportunities should be made available by making higher education affordable and by encouraging job growth. Now that I'm living with senior citizens, I get first hand access to see the needs of these members of society. In short, we must engage in activities that address the needs of members of our community of all ages.

Communication with our community.

Summary

Our residents depend on information concerning various programs and activities. Our current program needs to be updated.

Our city government owes it to our residents to provide as much information concerning activities and programs available for them. Although we are in a more technologically advanced society, we are currently way behind the times. In many cases, residents are not aware of activities until after the fact. Although I've made every effort to attend local Neighborhood Watch Meetings in order to share city information, it is up to our communications department from our City Clerks desk that needs to disseminate this information. If elected, I will make this one of my priorities. I will improve communication by attending as many of the community meetings being held throughout our city, particularly with our Senior Citizen Centers.

Voter participation.

Summary

Our city ranks 17th in population in the Los Angeles County while ranking 77th in voter participation. I will develope more opportunities for voter registration.

Voting is an essential right of our citizens. To rank 77th in voter participation while ranking 17th in population is clearly an opportunity for improvement. Our city has numerous city sponsored activities, various shopping centers, and many scheduled community meetings where opportunities for voter registration can be done. I want to personally participate in this process as well as developing programs with our three high schools for student engagement in this attempt to register voters.

Improve resident participation of council meetings.

Summary

Our council meetings are constantly held to just a handful of residents. These meetings can easily be made available through live streaming.

Important decisions are being made at council meetings. Our community is a working class community. Our community also has a high number of seniors. Attending meetings sometimes are difficult to attend. We must update our systems to make our meetings accessible online. Many cities already have some form of having these on live streaming or even video recording. Our city only has audio recording and only available a few days after the meeting. I will work on bringing these meetings as up to date as possible. Our residents should be able to see how our government is making decisions.
