I believe our best days are still ahead. I, like you, want Imperial Beach to prosper, but also to keep that small-town atmosphere, and be a place our children can be proud to live in decades from now.

PUBLIC SAFETY Everyone deserves the right to feel safe in their own home and community.  My commitment to keep Imperial Beach safe and secure has earned me the endorsement of the San Diego County  Deputy  Sheriffs’ Association as “Law Enforcement’s Choice”.

PROTECTING OUR  NEIGHBORHOODS  The  last  four  years  have  seen home values increase and we have experienced an unprecedented interest in commercial development. But opportunity also demands responsibility and an experienced hand to keep us on course. I will continue to insist that all development strictly adheres to hard-fought zoning standards, protects our neighborhoods, respects our natural environment and delivers sound economic benefits.

QUALITY OF LIFE As a teacher, retired Imperial Beach Lifeguard and founder of the City of Imperial Beach Junior Lifeguard Program, I understand that recreational activities improve our quality of life. I spearheaded the City of Imperial Beach Parks and Recreation Committee and negotiated the Imperial Beach Sports Park agreement, and will continue to work hard to expand recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.

Why I am Running for Re-Election and What Qualities I Bring to the Office

Summary

I am running for re-election to the City Council because I believe our best days are still ahead.  I, like you, want Imperial Beach to prosper, but also to keep that small town atmosphere, and be a place our children can be proud to live in decades from now.  I feel that everyone needs to give back to their community and I am ready to do more.

It has been an honor to serve as your City of Imperial Beach Council Member for the past four years. Thank you.

Imperial Beach truly embodies the term “Classic Southern California”.  We are sun, surf, family, nature, community, safety, small business, open space and opportunity.  The past four years have been an exciting time in Imperial Beach!  The “Pier South Hotel” and the “Sea180” restaurant are open and thriving! Our new library broke ground and is nearing completion! The 9th and Palm “Breakwater Town Center” is under construction!  New restaurants and businesses have set up shop.  Neighborhood improvements are ongoing and recreational opportunities for all ages have greatly expanded.  We continue to attract new homebuyers who value the qualities of life in a small coastal community.  Imperial Beach has become the Community of Choice to live, work and play!

We have accomplished much, but there is more to do...and more to protect.  Over the past four years I have cultivated solid, bi-partisan relationships at all levels of government to ensure Imperial Beach has a seat at the table on key issues and receives its fair share of revenues.  I will apply my knowledge and experience as a Councilmember so we can continue to better Imperial Beach while still maintaining the core values that our community demands.

As a 24-year elementary school teacher and acting principal, I bring insight into working with our local youth, listening skills and patience.  As a 30-year retired Imperial Beach Lifeguard II and EMT, I bring the perspective of a first responder, a first-hand understanding of the importance of public safety in our community, and the ability to calmly evaluate but act quickly in emergency situations.  As a 10-year Miramar College Instructor for the San Diego Regional Lifeguard Academy, I bring an understanding of the importance of preparedness and respect for the rigorous training all public safety personnel go through to keep us safe and secure.  And as the founder of the Imperial Beach Junior Lifeguard Program in 1995, I bring experience in creating, coordinating and administering a youth program, and understand how safe youth programs and recreational activities for all ages improve our quality of life.

I have been an Imperial Beach resident since 1985. My wife Katie and I are homeowners, choosing Imperial Beach to raise our family, because we love its warm sense of community.  My community ties span decades and have provided me a perspective on the diversity and the dedication of so many residents who give freely of their time on behalf of Imperial Beach.  I was recently elected by parents to serve on the Mar Vista School Site Council 2016-2017 and served as Assistant Coach for the Imperial Beach Charter School Surf Team.  Additionally, I am an Auxiliary Member of the Fleet Reserve Association, VFW and American Legion.

I offer a balanced, fair and thoughtful approach and pledge to represent Imperial Beach with integrity and respect.  I have demonstrated leadership skills, backed by seasoned experience and determination.

My commitment to our community and its residents is proven, longstanding and unwavering and I am honored to be a candidate for the 2016 Imperial Beach City Council.

I would be honored to have your support and vote.

Thank you.

Protecting & Preserving Imperial Beach's Small Town Atmosphere

Summary

Imperial Beach’s small-town atmosphere and warm sense of community is more than an identity...it’s a way of life.   Imperial Beach is sun, surf, family, nature, community, safety, small business, open space and opportunity.  All of these elements create the foundation for an unparalleled quality of life.  As a Councilmember for the past four years, I have been and will continue to be, ever-vigilant in protecting these elements and our small town quality of life.  My family and I treasure these values and will work hard to preserve them.

My family and I treasure these values and I pledge to work hard to preserve them.

I, like you, want Imperial Beach to prosper, but also to keep that small-town atmosphere, and be a place our children can be proud to live in decades from now. I believe we can continue to improve Imperial Beach and still protect our identity and quality of life.  The City Council and citizens must work together as we consider the full range of activities necessary to maintain a livable community.  Shopping, jobs, recreation, public safety, transportation and open space must all be balanced with safeguarding our core values.

Neighborhood improvements are ongoing and recreational opportunities for all ages have greatly expanded.  New restaurants and businesses have set up shop.  We continue to attract new homeowners who value the qualities of life in a small coastal community.  Imperial Beach has become the Community of Choice to live, work and play. There is more to do ... and there is more to protect.

We have experienced an unprecedented interest in commercial development.  But opportunity also demands responsibility and an experienced hand to keep us on course. When new commercial zoning regulations resulted in several “unintended consequences”, I met with citizens and took action to close the loopholes and make it right.  We can't just build our way into fiscal stability.  Additional development also creates additional strains on our public services, infrastructure and community livability. Good planning for a well-balanced community shouldn't be sacrificed for “quick fixes” to bolster our revenues.  I will continue to insist that all development strictly adheres to hard-fought zoning standards, protects our neighborhoods, respects our natural environment and delivers sound economic benefits.

The next Council will be responsible for the direction of our City’s future.  The next Council will be challenged with making decisions on tough issues that could place our small-town quality of life in jeopardy.  Issues such as increased height and density to accommodate new housing, additional beachfront hotels and others could potentially place our “Classic Southern California” way of life on the chopping block.  Any rush to decision, made simply to shore up our revenues, could potentially threaten our long-term quality of life and destroy a lifestyle that residents overwhelmingly support.

My commitment to protecting our neighborhoods and maintaining our small-town quality of life is proven, longstanding and unwavering.  I offer a balanced, fair and thoughtful approach and pledge to represent Imperial Beach with integrity and respect.  I have demonstrated leadership skills, backed by seasoned experience and determination.

I believe our best days are still ahead.   Working together, we can create an even better Imperial Beach and I would be honored to have your support and vote on November 8th.

  • Use my affiliation with the military community to help Imperial Beach manage their ever-growing presence. Let's reach out to many of the different departments that offer resources and solutions to our problems as a community.
  • Advocate for the children of Imperial Beach. As the mother of a toddler, I understand the needs of the modern parent. I encourage urban planners to create more spaces for families to interact by supporting projects such as a dog park or splash pad.
  • As a bilingual, I would be a stern advocate for our city when working and communicating with Mexican officials. We need to put pressure on CILA to update their pump station so that it can handle the capacity storms put on their system.

Imperial Beach needs a moderate non-partisan veteran voice; a voice that actively supports local business, advocates for safe neighborhoods, encourages thoughtful redevelopment and strives for clean communities; and a voice that speaks for our environmental heritage, distinct community values and Naval history while advancing economic policies.

Imperial Beach is a magical place, but it didn’t get this way by accident. We deserve new leadership that protects the future of our unique community by preserving its culture.

I possess skills for a new prosperous paradigm. My 24 year career as a Naval Officer shaped and sharpened me to be a collaborator with a unique ability to solve complex problems and make challenging conclusions. Additionally, I have served our community in numerous philanthropies and organizations which preserve our environment and reach out to people in need. I am a member of the Mayoral Advisory Committee, served two terms as a Citizens Forum Board Member for the International Boundary and Water Commission and possess an undergraduate and graduate degree.

I have the maturity, experience, and common sense to ask questions, study facts and make difficult decisions with citizen input. With your support I will represent your interests on the Imperial Beach City Council.

I have lived in Imperial Beach for 43 years and have benefited from the values and charm our small city enjoys. The quality education I received from Harbor View Elementary, Mar Vista Middle, and Mar Vista High (Class of 1990), coupled with the strong family values and dedication to community service instilled upon me by my parents and grandparents, have made me who I am today.

I'm a third generation "IB Local" with roots in Imperial Beach dating back to the 1960's. My grandparents George & Elizabeth Wright, were founding members of both the Imperial Beach Whale & Sunset Watchers Society (Whale of a City) and the Citizens Action Group of Imperial Beach. George was on 1981 General Plan Committee (appointed by then Mayor Brian Bilbray

The last eight years I’ve been one of the most politically engaged residents in our city. During this time, with the support and encouragement of residents and city leaders, I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of many rewarding projects and events. Leading the community’s effort in finding a solution for the Sports Park and partnering with residents, local businesses, and city leaders to “Bring Back the Boom” for the Fourth of July are two accomplishments I’m extremely proud of because they both utilized a collaborative approach to problem solving.

In 2009 I co-founded the community group I Heart IB with the love of my life and best friend Candy Unger. Together Candy and I set out to make Imperial Beach a better place to live, work, and play. I’ve chaired Imperial Beach’s Park & Recreation Committee since 2014 and also been an active member of the Mayoral Advisory Council.

Now more than ever Imperial Beach needs pragmatic leaders whose sole devotion is to the best interests of Imperial Beach. We all love IB’s unpretentious, laid-back, small-town charm. It is incumbent upon our city leaders to negotiate a path to protect those values we’ve held dear since before our incorporation, while at the same time allowing the growth that’s required to stay incorporated. It’s also important to remember that the best path for IB will only come about if residents are engaged, informed, and looked at as stakeholders in the decision-making process.

I’m grateful to have the opportunity to run for City Council. I look forward to engaging voters and exchanging ideas. I am confident I can help Imperial Beach continue moving forward in a positive direction while staying true to the “Classic Southern California” way of life we all love.

I am pleased to be endorsed by the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of San Diego County and I humbly ask for your support and your vote on November 8th.

The City of Imperial Beach has been my home since 1973. I cherish IB’s small-town atmosphere and I’m committed to protecting the charm and values of our city.

I am an advocate for public safety, small business, and the youth of Imperial Beach. I also know first hand how important it is to protect our environment, especially our oceans and beaches.

I currenly sit as the Chair of the Parks & Recreation Committee and I’m also an active memember of the Mayor’s Advisory Council. As Co-Founder of the community group I Heart IB, I’ve helped lead the fundraising campaign that brought 4th of July fireworks back to Imperial Beach.

I believe in government transparency and vow to be a voice for all residents of Imperial Beach. I intend to maintain an unprecedented level of accessibility, and by proactively seeking community input, I believe I can help strengthen IB’s sense of community.

Together, we can continue to make the City of Imperial Beach the jewel of the South Bay.
