  • The implementation of Common Core has been a general disaster. The district needs to revamp and decide on which of the multiple Common Core options are best and eliminate those that do not work. "Common Sense, Not Common Core"
  • The district has over $166 million dollars for its 2016/2017 budget. Revenue has increased over the past 3 years but so has administrative costs. We need to focus on how these increases can more directly impact the classroom and help our students.
  • Campus safety needs to be addressed. During the recent "peaceful protests" in El Cajon district schools were forced to close. A district wide contingency plan and safety plan needs to be developed.

RAMONA IRWIN
AGE: 44
Community Organizer/Student

I would be proud and honored to represent the people of the Cajon Valley Unified School District as a member of the school board. If you allow me the opportunity to serve you, I will always place the needs of the people in our community above all else. As a parent, I have watched my son struggle through a system designed to fill quotas and meet statistical guidelines. As a student at SDSU where I am entering my senior year, I understand what it is like to be sitting in the classroom, doing mountains of homework and the crunch of due dates. As a life-long community volunteer for numerous organizations, I have experienced what it means to contribute for no other reason than because it’s the right thing to do. As an active community organizer, I have been able to increase effectiveness of individual voices by bringing people together, I have played roles in citizen oversight committees, started and participated in various civic groups, and have successfully overcome opposition when working for the greater good. I am a hard worker, with more passion than polish and I can promise that nobody will work harder for your families than I will.

CAJON VALLEY UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT
Governing Board Member

KAREN CLARK-MEJIA
Educator

I am running for the Cajon Valley Union School District Board with knowledge, skills, and ability to assess challenges and find solutions to provide our students opportunities to reach their potential in a collaborative approach.

I believe I add value to this board by being an advocate and "philanthropist of people". This is evident in my professional experience in the non-profit sector, my community and volunteer service as well as with my leadership achievements.

As a leader, educator and advocate, I have worked in many capacities to serve our community. I teach science for Earth Discovery Institute and have the privilege to inspire children in learning and advocating for their environment with hands on experiences and technology. Additionally, I serve as the Lead Marriage and Family Therapist Intern at New Day Women's Center and Counseling Services. I have partnered with teen programs for the underserved youth to educate, counsel, and mentor teens and their families in east county and within Grossmont Union School District.

My family has opened our home to support the reunification and transition for teens and their parents who are struggling.
