My Top 3 Priorities

  • Work for equity among all schools in all communities so all students have the potential for a great future.
  • Let teachers know their commitment to our students is appreciated.
  • Ensure tax-payers know their investment in our schools will have a great return.

San Diego State University B.A., School of Social Work, S.D.S.U. 1977 M.P.H., Graduate School of Public Health, S.D.S.U. 1990 (1990)

Growing up in a military family and moving around the country frequently, I attended over 10 different schools, both public and private, before I graduated high school in Vista.  Attended Palomar College in San Marcos for 2 years and transferred to San Diego State University for a B.A. from the School of Social Work.  7 years of work in health and human service programs were followed by an application to the Graduate School of Public Health at SDSU.  Since earning the M.P.H., I have worked as a consultant in health, safety, and productivity issues, providing trainings to public and private agencies, businesses, and municipalities.  My primary application of my education and experience over the past 23 years is as an Adjunct Professor of Health Education with the San Diego Community College District.  I have also taught at Southwestern Community College, Chapman University, San Diego State University, and 2 vocational schools.

Political Beliefs

Political Philosophy

As far as a political philosophy, I think the last thing education needs is to be politicized.  It needs to remain a true refuge of independence and freedom of thought, unencumbered by anyone's political influenece.

My "educational" philosophy would be: To develop the Board into a catalyst to ensure that education becomes THE priority in San Diego County and to ensure the State of California realizes that we cannot tolerate the state budget being balanced on the backs of our students.  Working together, we can make a difference in the way students are taught, teachers and support staff are treated, and taxpayers feel about how their money is being spent.
