A graduate of UCLA and Harvard Law School, Kim is currently a Deputy Attorney General at the California Department of Justice. During her nearly 16-year legal career, Kim has handled complex civil matters in the state and federal trial courts, litigated multiple cases in the appellate courts, and argued before the California Supreme Court. Kim brings with her years of experience in the areas of contracts, torts, constitutional law, criminal law and procedure, family law, and juvenile dependency law.

Kim also brings a compelling personal story as a first generation Vietnamese American. The daughter of political refugees, her parents fled Vietnam and immigrated to the United States in 1975, first to a refugee camp in Arkansas, then to Camp Pendleton in San Diego. Born in San Francisco, Kim spent her early childhood in Echo Park and Chinatown, and attended Castelar Elementary School. Kim’s parents later moved to the San Gabriel Valley, where they planted their roots and became American citizens.

Kim has planted her own deep roots in the Los Angeles County community. She is an active member of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association and the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, and a current volunteer attorney with Advancing Justice Los Angeles’s citizenship outreach program.  Kim currently lives in South Pasadena with her husband and two children.

Do you favor alternative, non-jail sentences for non-violent offenders and what options should be available?
Answer from Kim L. Nguyen:

Our justice system requires a tough and smart approach to crime.  I stand ready to keep violent criminals off our streets.  I also recognize that alternative sentencing for non-violent offenders can help alleviate jail overcrowding and give individuals a chance to learn from their mistakes and get back on track.
